"Umeed! Kya hua? Kya kaha maa ne?" Umeed jumped, her hand flying to her heart, "Aapne toh dara hi diya mujhe, aise choro ki tarah peeche se aagaye."
Farjaad had stepped out of his car seeing Umeed leave the office, he had been waiting in his car to be allowed back by his mom. He let out a small laugh looking at her, still recovering from the fright. "Haan, pehle aap hans lein phir main batao aap ko kuch," her hands flew to her waist as she rolled her eyes, attempting to brush the fact that he caught her off-guard under the carpet.
He slipped his hands into his pockets, putting on a facade of nonchalance, "Pata nahi mere hansne se ya khush rehne se aap ko kya issue hai." She rolled her eyes at the subtle taunt and decided perhaps it was her turn to have some fun, "Maine aapki mom ko sabbbb bata diya hai."
She stopped teasingly, biting away the smile that was threatening to make its way on to her face. Farjaad's eyes widened, almost comically. "Ye sab kya hai?" Umeed leaned against Farjaad's car and looked at him, nothing but innocence in her eyes, "Sab matlab sab...Lahore, Dubai, har cheez." His hands left his pockets and he gestured What?
"Ab kyun dar rahe hain? Wahan toh aap ko bilkul dar nahi laga tha," she crossed her arms across her chest and fluttered her lashes at him. He almost missed the slight skip in his heartbeat which was already elevated at the thought that she had told his mom everything.
He almost reached for her hand instinctively, she noticed the way his open palm swung past her wrist and then back to his side, she clenched her own fist, her palms suddenly cold at the loss of touch that never reached her. Farjaad eyed her carefully, noticing her tell, she had wanted him to hold her hand. "Baat suno, mujhe dar abhi bhi nahi lag raha hai. Main sirf clarify karna chah raha hoon ki mujhe kya batana hai maa ko."
She broke into a smile, "Acha? Aapko meri kahaaniyan copy karni hain ab? Khud banayein apni kahaaniyan. Waise, itne creative aap hain nahi. Sach hi bata dijiyega."
Farjaad squinted his eyes at her, she really was rather maddening, knowing each one of his strings and playing him to perfection, every time.
"Toh tumne sach nahi bataya?"
They were interrupted by Farjaad's phone ringing, it was his mom.
"Jee maa, parking mein hoon bass...Wapas aajaun?...Okay, coming."
He ended the call, "Batao?"
"Unhi se pooch lein, wohi bata dengi kya kya kaha hai maine," she got off his car and strutted off to her own car, "Umeed!"
"Bye!"
"Suno!"
She quickly locked the door and instructed the driver to go to Mimi's since she knew she would be alone right now and she could use a friend. They drove past a baffled Farjaad and Umeed shot him her best smile and waved through the window.
Farjaad gripped his phone tighter, preparing to meet the disaster waiting for him in his cabin, wishing he had received some sort of heads up or debriefing from Umeed prior.
He entered his cabin to find Niggo sitting on the chair Umeed was previously occupying, right across his own chair. His mom turned her head to look at him and gestured for him to sit down.
She was resting her perfectly manicured hands on the table and she wore a straight face, Farjaad tried to read his mom but couldn't tell much of what she knew or what she was thinking. He waited patiently for her to break the silence.
Niggo observed her son, almost looking afraid, she remembered all the times he had met her eyes with his nervous ones when he was a young boy, sometimes when he had come home late from football practice, other times when he would sneak stray cats into their home and she would find out. She almost smiled to herself, reflecting on how all her son's fears always seemed to stem from all that he loved—hobbies, animals in need, and now Umeed. He never had an issue holding his own, at least in front of her, not at his age, but times like these, he really did seem to be afraid of what his heart wanted to do and what his mom would remind him his brain should have directed him to do instead.
