SHOW AND TELL
---
Neither of us breathed a word of any of it the next day.
It was as though we'd both made some sort of silent agreement to awkwardly tiptoe around each other as if we'd committed some crime. Not that I'd suddenly expected us to be best friends simply because we'd shared peculiarities but I at least expected he'd be slightly more open to the idea of me staying in the house.
I was wrong.
Olive was the first to greet me as I made my way downstairs, she offered a friendly smile and asked if I'd had a good night's rest. I may or may not have told a small lie. Of course, I slept all through the night. No, there wasn't an annoying boy on the other side of my wall who enjoyed keeping me awake with his doll fights. No, he most certainly hadn't carried me to my bed after I'd embarrassed myself and fallen asleep.
The pyrokinetic seemed satisfied with my answers and made her way outside leaving me alone wondering where everyone was. A glimpse at the clock told me I'd slept a lot longer than I'd thought I had and nerves suddenly took over me. First impressions meant a lot, and after yesterday, I was sure waking up late wouldn't help the situation. However, the worry didn't last long as a small hand took mine. Looking down, I saw Claire smiling eagerly and begging me to come join everyone outside. Her blonde curls bounced as she skipped, leading me to where all the children surrounded a small make-shift stage, and sat on blankets as if ready to have a picnic. Even Enoch seemed to be out of his room, which Emma whispered was a rare occurrence.
"Nice of you to join us," Victor joked with a small chuckle. I rolled my eyes in mock offense and blushed lightly though didn't say anything as I sat down on the soft grass between the strong boy and Emma. Enoch flashed me a look from his spot beside Olive but similarly, didn't say anything, his expression also giving nothing away. My thoughts were soon interrupted by a series of applause as a bird flew down to the space in front of us, in a flash the bird had transformed itself into a woman with the same sharp features - Miss Peregrine. I joined in with the applause. Though the children must have seen her change thousands of times, the trick was still able to amaze everyone, including me.
"Right then, shall we begin?" She asked with a small smile before sitting down beside us all as Bronwyn and Victor made their way to the space in front of everyone where Miss Peregrine had just stood. I didn't understand what she had meant but not wanting to embarrass myself, I kept quiet. Especially since the strong siblings seemed to know exactly what they were doing. The small girl looked around for a moment before finding the biggest boulder she could and lifting it over her head with ease. The children applauded though again, I was sure they'd seen this trick multiple times. Even so, the applause grew even more when the girl's older brother lifted her onto his shoulder, holding on with one arm.
I couldn't help the grin that was on my face as the acts continued. It was fascinating to see the different children showcase their talents as some I could have never even imagined. Like little Claire who lifted her curls to reveal a mouth on the back of her head that would catch grapes, she threw into the air before she skipped back to join us. Next was Fiona and Hugh as a double act, together they made their way up and began. The pair worked well together, Fiona growing series of colourful flowers at her feet with Hugh's bees pollinating them before the flowers weaved their way into the most intricate crowns I'd ever seen. The bees carried them to the heads of all the girls, and I couldn't help but notice the slight pink colour of Hugh's face when Fiona placed one on his head too. They were a good pair.
The rest of the acts passed just as quickly, everyone who wanted to put on an act that was. Abe sat down and simply watched so as the newbie in the house, I stayed where I was to chat with him."My peculiarity is something I can't perform as an act" He explained without going into any further detail, "but I guess yours is too right?" I gave a small laugh and shook my head before standing up. "Well if mine's not able to be an act then I suppose you wouldn't mind coming to be my assistant" I practically challenged. I knew Abe didn't mean to insult me but I was determined to prove him wrong and I knew exactly how.
Abe gave a quizzical look but took the hand I'd outstretched to help himself up and followed me to where everyone else had been performing their acts. He didn't seem like the type of person to back out of a challenge which made what I was about to do all the more fun. He gave me a slightly worried look, but I simply replied with a wink and placed my hand on his shoulder.
A flood of memories came into my vision that I tried to push aside for now. He'd had a painful life, that became clear in a matter of seconds. Men shouting and floods of people wearing clothes brandished with yellow stars, a woman screaming out for her child but even more terrifying - Large monsters with no eyes and tentacles emerging from their mouths, surrounded by sharp teeth. Only some happy memories remained (most including the children and most commonly Emma) so I took a moment to pull those further to the front where he could see them when things began to get painful. However, that was not what I was here for. Focusing, carefully I conjured up a new memory. A memory that would change Abe's entire thought system.
Abe would now believe he was born as a duck.
The boy started quacking and flapping his arms like a maniac as the children laughed and applauded. I giggled letting him continue in the embarrassing state, noticing Emma laughing particularly hard before returning my hand to his shoulder and removing the thought. Of course, the boy didn't remember a thing but when he asked, all I could reply with was "I guess you're right, I don't have anything to perform" He rolled his eyes and I thanked him for being a spectacular assistant with a hug.
Most of the children continued to applaud and giggle but out of the corner of my eye, I could see one person who was not and he did not look impressed.
