NOTE: The moon isn't flirty with Caine in this one-shot. She is more of a mother figure to him than anything.

For a while now Kinger had been struggling to sleep. He would walk the halls of the oddly large circus tent until he found his way out. There was a large hill that he loved to sit on and think about future insect collections, anything to distract him from Kaufmo extracting would help. Over all the time he spent there so many people were lost...and it hurt.

Tonight was like all the previous ones, he dragged himself out of his pillow fort and made his way outside. He loved the quiet. Everything was always so loud when the gang was awake and Caine was setting his little adventures. It usually caused him to panic and run to the nearest of the many pillow forts that he set up around the digital circus. The chess piece made his way up the hill and sat on the soft grass at the top, he let out a content sigh and looked up to the choppy PNGs they called a sky.

Suddenly Kinger heard quiet mumbling from a hill below him, he peered down and there sat... Caine? What would the ringmaster be doing outside at 2 AM? Worried he would disrupt him Kinger remained quiet and began to listen in.

"Oh moon. How come nobody seems to enjoy my adventures? I try my best to accommodate them but... what's the point?" He sniffled a little whilst hugging his legs close to his chest. She looked down at him "Now why would they think that?" The moon kindly replied. Silence. Caine stared down at the tufts of sharp-edged weeds now crushed within the palms of his gloved hands. "I don't know. It's just that Kaufmo extracted recently and it HAS to be my fault right? I mean the exit he saw was just my unfinished project..." She gave the ringmaster a saddened look upon learning this. With that, Caine sadly poofed away without another word being spoken.

"You can come out now" She turned her gaze to the bush that Kinger slowly edged towards to not get caught peeping and jumped upon hearing the voice "So what are you doing here?" he froze not expecting her to engage in a conversation with him so just like he usually does he screamed and ran back to his room. (What a goober) When he closed the door he sank into the sea of pillows strewn across the floor and began to get a well-needed rest.

TIME SKIP: MORNING

"Hello everyone! What a great morning we are having! Ready for a brand new, exciting adventure?" Everyone was gathered together like they usually do each morning and stared at the floating spectacle that is Caine. However, Kinger saw something in him that nobody else could. Emotion. After all, he wasn't built to feel such things yet here he is hiding the sadness in his eyes through the distractions of adventure. Zooble and Jax huffed at the announcement whilst Pomni and Ragatha tried their best to remain positive even if they were clearly uninterested. Kinger saw how their reactions could hurt Caine and knew what he had to do. "Hey, Caine?" Everyone turned to him. All the eyes were on him. A bead of sweat ran down his forehead. "I know this isn't really an adventure but I was thinking you could help me with my collection?"

Caine stared at the chess piece absolutely confuzzled that someone wanted to spend time with him but quickly snapped out of it, shaking his head wildly. "Why of course my dear friend! I would love that very much..." The ringmaster mellowed out his words feeling touched by the offer. "But what about the adv-?" Gangle chimed in before getting rudely disrupted by Jax "We will be fine Caine. Let's all take a break from adventures today huh?" The slender bunny glanced around at the rest of the group who nodded in agreement knowing there was no point in protesting. "Great!" He clapped his hands pridefully and everyone dispersed leaving Caine and Kinger alone together.

The ringmaster slowly glided down onto his feet to be at Kinger's level, hesitantly, Kinger grabbed his hand to guide him toward his room. Caine was taken by surprise but cooperated, a dust of red covered his face but the other didn't notice as he was struggling with the doorknob to get into his room, the focus in his large eyes intrigued him, they were so beautiful and satisfying to look into. Caine found himself getting lost in his appearance.

SLAM!!!

Kinger swung the door open unexpectedly and fell right to the floor dragging Caine along with him. His gloved hands clung to his purple robe for dear life and he closed his eyes shut burying his head into the soft fabric...so warm. Kinger stared down at the small man underneath him and felt his face get all hot with embarrassment. "H-hey. Are you ok?" He stumbled with his words unsure how to process the situation. Caine finally snapped to his senses and pushed himself away from Kinger rapidly, flustered that he would do such a thing. "Why yes my dear friend! I am quite alright, how about you?" his voice was loud almost like he was trying to drown the awkwardness out with it.

Before he could receive a reply he wandered over to the back of Kinger's room where he kept all his insect terrariums. Buzzing, clicking, and scratching could be heard very loudly in this part of the room due to the sheer amount of digital creatures he collected over the many years he was there. Caine was impressed, to say the least. "Why you have quite the collection don't you?" The ringmaster stared on in awe at the beautiful colors of each insect " They are all so...beautiful" He found himself getting lost in the sight not noticing Kinger silently approaching behind him.

"What am I doing?" Kinger thought as he moved closer and closer toward Caine. He saw the talk Caine had with Moon, the way he grabbed him when they fell and now he was spaced out staring at his collection almost forgetting his existence. "Yeah. Caine needs this." The chess piece confirmed in his mind before wrapping his soft hands around his waist from behind, slowly pulling the slightly dazed man into a warm embrace. Caine blushed profusely and began to sweat at the intimate contact "AH! K-kinger" he glanced down at the hands interlocking at his stomach "What are you doing?"

Not knowing how to reply to him the robed figure remained silent and pulled him in even closer hoping to give some sort of comfort. After a few minutes of comfortable yet tense quietness, Caine mumbled two small words that reassured Kinger of his actions "Thank you". He put his smaller gloved hands over Kinger's bigger ones enjoying this contact a little too much. He was a ringmaster after all, surely these actions would be frowned upon by the others?

Suddenly, he was turned around to face the tall chess piece peering down at him knowingly "Caine, I don't think everyone dislikes your adventures and I just want to say that I'm grateful for you. You are always so bright and inventive and smart and funny a-"  before he could ramble any more Caine grabbed Kinger's face and pulled him in for a small yet passionate kiss. The both of them stood in shock for what felt like forever after he pulled away.

"Thank you Kinger...you don't know how much that really means to me." Shivering with fear of rejection Caine sunk to the ground, tears forming in his large eyes "I hope you can forgive me...I do not know what went over me." The salty bubbles escaped from their confinement, hitting the wooden floor with tiny taps.

"Oh, Caine" Kinger sat down next to him and draped a large blanket from inside his pillow fort over his shoulders "You don't have to be sorry. If I'm being honest I kind of enjoyed it... did you?" He looks away bashful due to his own words. Caine felt like a weight had been lifted from his chest and began to giggle a little causing Kinger to look back at him confused, he wiped away the wetness on his face and sighed a breath of relief. "Of course I did. Otherwise, I wouldn't have done it." He sprawled his hand across the other's hands that were lying on the ground "And I wouldn't have traded the whole digital world for this experience"

They stared at each other lovingly until they felt the heaviness of having a lack of shut-eye. With that, they wrapped each other within one another's arms and got much-needed rest right there on Kinger's floor, cuddling calmly in a nest of pillows.

(both were too exhausted and snug to move. Can you honestly blame them?)
