The sound of a baby crying met Jean's ears as soon as he walked into the house. He followed the sound, calling out for his wife, "Mikasa? Mikasa where are you? Did something happen?"
He went into the babies room and picked her up. She stopped crying and pulled on Jean's hair. Jean smiled, "Hey cutie, what happened? Where's mama?"
She, of course did not respond, instead started trying to chew on Jean's nose. Laughing, he put her back down in her crib, "I'll be right back."
Placing down a toy that she immediately put in her mouth, Jean left. Mikasa wasn't in the house. He knew where she probably was and couldn't help but feel angry. He didn't mind her going there but she left Abby all alone.
(Abby's the baby btw)Angrily, he walked out the door, trying to see if maybe she was still here. And she was. Standing on the porch, Mikasa was staring out into the distance, her hair blowing into her face, her eyes distant and her mouth open slightly, like she was whispering to someone. He stared at her, wanting to shake her out of whatever she was thinking of. Whoever she was thinking of. But he couldn't, he wasn't sure why but he couldn't bring himself to snap her out of it. A beat of silence past, then a bird squawked loudly near Jean, making him jump. And with that the silence was broken.
"Jean? Is something wrong," Mikasa asked. He gestured back to the house and said, "You left Abby in there. She was crying."
Mikasa glanced at the house and looked back to Jean, "Sorry, I thought I heard-"
She stops herself and looks back out to the distance. Jean didn't need her to finicpsh to know what she was going to say."Oh."
. . .
He turns back to the house, and starts going back inside. Mikasa doesn't follow. Jean stops at the door.
"Come in soon, okay Mikasa? You'll get cold out here if you stay to long," he said. Mikasa nods, not looking at him. His chest aches as he watches her, the love of his life waiting for the love of her life. And it aches more still as he reminds himself that the person she waits for to run down the hill and pick her up in his arms, will never be him.
