A wild ringing sound penetrated her consciousness and she barely opened her eyes. It took her a few seconds to get her bearings and she looked at the clock when it rang again: 2:35am

Who on earth rang her doorbell in the middle of the night as if it were a matter of life and death?

She quickly threw on her bathrobe and went downstairs. She left the lights off so as not to attract attention in case the nocturnal visitor had no good intentions.

"Who 's there?"

"It's just me, Pen."

How could that be? Was she just dreaming and actually still upstairs in bed? Was her imagination playing tricks on her because she wanted it so badly?

She immediately turned on the light in the hallway and excitedly unlocked the door. The cold night air instantly made her shiver and she decided she must be awake when she saw the familiar figure standing in front of her, her stomach beginning to flutter with excitement and her heart beating wildly.

"Sam? Why are you here already?" But he didn't answer. With one step he stood in front of her, pulling her against him so quickly that she gasped in surprise when she felt his lips on hers. She immediately clasped her hands behind his neck and let herself fall completely, surrendering to the moment as they deepened the kiss that made her emotions go crazy and made them completely lost in the moment.

Neither knew how much time had passed before they parted breathlessly. Sam put his forehead against hers, held her tightly in his arms, hoping he would never have to let go of her again and sank into her beautiful eyes as she did into his.

"I couldn't take it anymore. I had to see you, kiss you, touch you. I missed you so much. The longing for you almost drove me crazy, even more so since I know that you feel the same way I do. But today was pure torture."

"I felt the same way and I'm more than happy you're here, Sam."

"I kept the meal as short as possible and then checked out of the hotel as soon as I got there. I couldn't bear to be without you anymore. You're not mad that I drove tonight? "

"You're here, with me, healthy and happy. That's the main thing. Why should I be angry about something that I can't change anymore anyway and that also made me so happy? But why didn't you say anything? I would have waited for you."

"And it would have worried you. That's why I didn't say anything. I felt guilty about not writing to you after I left Boyce's, but I was afraid I'd spill the beans and you'd get angry."

"That would almost certainly have been the case," she objected with a smile.

"I wanted to get to you as quickly as possible. Nothing could have stopped me."

"You're a really stubborn person, but that's what I love about you too." He took a step back when he noticed something before pulling her close again.

“The bathrobe suits you just as well as I imagined,” he said with a grin.

"Now don't tell me you couldn't get that out of your head all week?!"

"I'm just a man. But I'm pleased to see that you actually managed to get rid of the smell." He pulled her close and buried his nose in her soft hair, inhaling deeply her wonderful scent as she snuggled into his chest.

"Next time you'll go back into the canal."

"We'll just send Arnold down." Penny laughed quietly to herself.

"Never take advantage of your rank Sam."

"I don't do that. I just give the next generation the chance to achieve great things."

"In the sewer?!"

"You can be a hero anywhere."

"In any case, you are my hero. You saved me from a very troubled and unhappy night today." She kissed him briefly before sighing with the echo of the emotions that his kisses aroused in her: "I missed you so much. I love you, with all my body and soul."

"I love you too, Penny. More than you can imagine," he replied quietly and kissed her passionately, which finally clouded her senses.

"Looks like we're starting with breakfast after all."

"I thought you didn't go at it like that?" He grinned so cheekily that Penny playfully punched him in the stomach. "Oof!"

"If you want to complain, feel free to sleep on the couch."

"I will never complain about anything, I promise you. I have you. I am the happiest man in the world and always will be," he breathed against her lips and kissed her so gently that it drove Penny crazy.

"Let's go to bed. It's late and I don't want to oversleep breakfast."

"What's one breakfast compared to the 18.262 you'll have to face in the next 50 years." Penny looked back at him skeptically on the stairs.

"You haven't really calculated the days?" He just shrugged and smiled.

"It was a long drive. And I stopped counting at 50 years. Every day after that, we will live as we please - breakfast in the evening, lunch in the morning, cuddling all day. No work - no structures - no worry. Just you and me." They had now reached the top and he pulled her into his arms again, spinning in circles with her as she laughed.

"You're so cute, Sam." He rolled his eyes with a smile as she kissed him. "Then let's get started and start the countdown." She pulled him into the bedroom with her.

"I don't want to start a countdown. Every minute that I can spend in your company should never end as far as I'm concerned. Nothing matters as long as you're with me," he explained to her as he stretched himself out to took off his shirt and trousers and laid down next to her.

"And I will always be from now on. I'm only happy with you. Forever," she sighed contentedly as she snuggled into his strong arms and they fell asleep instantly - finally together and it almost seemed as if the last week and their separation haven't existed.
