Satyavati sighed, "Toh koi aisa upaaye batao, jisse dharm ki haani bhi na ho aur Maharaj Shantanu ke vansh ka bhi annt na ho."
"Rajmata, dharm ki oor drishti daale anyatha hum sabka naash ho jayega. Kshatriya ka satya se vichlit hona, dharm ke virudh hai. Pitashree ke vansh bachane ka ek dharmyukt upaaye mai aapko batata hu." Bhishm said.
Satyavati looked at him hopefully, as he spoke, "Jamdagneya Parshuram ji ne iss prithvi ko 21 baar kshatriyo se rikt kar diya tha. Tab kshatraniyo ne aatma-niyantrit Brahmano dwara santaan praapt kar, apne vansh badhaye the. Vedo mei spasht likha hai ki aise niyog ke dwara janme putra uske kehlayenge jo uss stree ka pati hoga. Iss prakaar, dharm ko man mei rakh, Kshatraniyo ne punah iss prithvi ko kshatriya pradaan kiye the."
Satyavati understood what he meant, she fell into deep thinking, contemplating it.
"Mata, kisi sarvagun sampann Brahman ko nimantrit kariye, jo Vichitraveerya ke kshetra par putra roopi fal ka beej boye." Bhishm said.
A red tint appeared on the face of Satyavati, she smiled and in a bashful voice told Bhishm, "Tumne Satya kaha hai, putra. Aur mujhe tum par vishwas hai. Ab mai batati hu ki hume kya karna chahiye. Apne yauvan ke charam par, jab mai naav chalaya karti thi tab Rishi Parashar mere paas aaye, unhe yamuna ke uss paar Jana tha."
-- FLASHBACK --
Rishi Parashar, the greatest among those who know dharma, needed to go on the other side of river Yamuna for pilgrimage. When Satyavati, who was in the prime of her youth, was rowing the boat, the sage felt desire for her, seeing her unparalleled beauty.
He approached the timid maiden, and pacified her with gentle words. But Satyavati was still scared, not only of the sage's curse if she didn't fulfil his wish and also of her father's anger.
"Tapodhan, hum Yamuna ke madhya hai, aur dono oor Rishiyo ki bheed hai. Sabke samaksh hum kaise ?" She hesitated.
Parashar rishi understood her hesitance, and using the power of his austeries, he created a fog so that the entire place seemed to be covered in darkness. On witnessing this sudden creation of fog by the great rishi, the young Satyavati was surprised and overcome with modesty.
She spiritedly said, "Rishivar, mai ek Kumari kanya hu jo apne Pita ke sanrakshan mei hai. Yadi mera kaumaritva bhang ho gaya, toh mai ghar kaise jayungi ? Iss baat par vichaar kare aur fir Jo uchit ho woh kare."
"Devi, tum jab yamuna ke iss dwip par mere putra ko janm dedogi, toh apne kaumaritva ko punah praapt kar logi. Iski chinta na karo sundari aur koi vardaan maango mujhse. Mera diya vardaan kabhi afalit nahi hota." Parashar said.
Satyavati thought for a moment, before saying, "Mere tan se matsya ki durgandh aati hai, dev. Meri iccha hai ki mere tan se sadev pushpo ki sugandh aaye."
Parashar rishi smiled and with his powers, removed the foul smell from her body and gave her a divine fragrance, transforming Matsyagandha to Yojangandha, the one whose pleasant scent could be smelled from the distance of a yojan.
Satyavati was extremely happy after obtaining this matchless boon. The one adorned with all the charms of a woman then had intercourse with that rishi of wonderful deeds.
On that very day, she conceived as a result of the union with sage Parashar and gave birth to an immensely powerful son on an island in the Yamuna. Because he was born on an island, he came to be known as Dwaipayan. And because he was dark in complexion, he was also called Krishna.
"Mata, aapki aagya se mai Rishiyo ka jeevan vyatit karne jaa raha hu. Parantu aap jab bhi kisi karya hetu mujhe smaran kare, mai uss hi kshan aapke samaksh prakat ho jayunga." He said.
Knowing that dharm loses one leg at the end of every yuga and that human life expectancy on earth and strength follow the pattern of the yugas, and moved by his desire to please Brahma and the Brahmanas, the learned one divided the Vedas into four parts. Thus he came to be known as Vyas.
This great sage Krishna Dwaipayan Vyas, was none other than an avatar of Vishnudev himself.
-- FLASHBACK OVER --
"Tatparya, Ved Vyas aapke putra hai Mata ?" Bhishm asked astonished, with hands joined in reverence.
"Ha." Satyavati smiled, "Dwaipayan paap-mukt, aaveg-mukt aur satyanisht Rishi hai. Meri drishti mei keval wahi hai jo Bharatvansh ko uttam putra pradaan kar sakta hai."
Bhishm said, "Aapne jo kaha hai, woh sarvadhik uchit hai, aur mujhe swikarya bhi."
