Somewhere in the shadow of an early nightfall and on the other side of the world, a man paused.
...
He'd seen a flicker out of the corner of his eye –– just a moment, just a flash of something pale against the dark. It flickered there, like a hand held out through time and space and everything else in between.
It was enough to make him stall in mid-conversation, words thinning as his mouth dried. It was slight, but it was there. His eyes, very slightly, narrowed, a realisation dawning on him as surely as the sun crossing the horizon.
Was that—?
The person a few steps ahead of him noticed.
Their head turned to watch the man stare into an empty space, as if entranced. He didn't catch the moment of impassive horror that creased the corners of the immortal ––
"Boss, you good?"
The voice echoed down a alleyway and the man blinked.
The spectre had disappeared before he'd even looked away.

It was Liz Forbes who'd called to her.
The Mystic Falls sheriff was standing beside her, with a suddenness that had almost robbed the air from Jeanie's lungs. The Gilbert's eyes wheeled over to her. Her new acquaintance, Chelsea, just frowned.
"Jeanie?" Liz repeated softly.
When Jeanie looked over at her, her brow was furrowed.
Liz looked to Chelsea, but the girl just shrugged.
"Are you okay to talk for a moment outside?" Liz asked.
And Jeanie, with her breath whistling through her teeth, and her eyes still stuck to where the outline of her ex-boyfriend had once stood, nodded: "Sure."
