The Sirens

My name, is Reena. I survived the time of the sirens.

I remember when they first started. Everyone who was alive during that paralyzing time does. We were all in our daily routines, but suspecting that our lives would change. For better or for worse.

See, not everyone's lives were screwed up by the sirens. Mine wasn't. Mine changed for the better. I got away from my home. I'm free. I can't, however, say the same for Niki.

The air felt strangely different today. No one could quite say how but everyone noticed.

I was sitting in my algebra class, learning about boring equations that no one in this class would really need to know for the future, when they started. The sirens.

At first it sounded like a car starting up and sputtering but then it got louder. It turned to a nails on chalkboard screeching.

The students slapped their hands over their ears and climbed under desks, afraid it was some sort of natural disaster alarm. The teacher started cussing and pacing around the front of the room.

I was clueless. My earbuds were stuck in my ears and my iPod was cranked up, overpowering the alarming noise. But that didn't stop me from noticing.

I popped out an earbud and instantly regretted it. The noise was terrible but I fought it. I ran to the front of the room and yelled in the teachers ear so he could hear me. "What the hell's going on?"

He looked me in the face and I could instantly see his recognition. I was the quiet student. All the teachers loved me because I got my work done on time and didn't talk. But I was also rumored to be the violent and scary goth girl by my fellow students.

He nodded, completely disregarding my question and shouted back, choosing his words carefully, "persuade everyone to come up here, to the front. I'll explain in a moment."

He left to his desk and brought out a ring of keys. He then went and shut the classroom door, locked it and ran to a doorway in the back if the room. I rounded everyone up with a couple threats and waited impatiently as I was fired with questions I couldn't answer.

"What's going on?"

"I need to call home now!"

"Why are you in charge?"

"Is this a tornado drill or for real?"

"Shut the fuck up!" I screamed and it got dead silent. The sirens had even stopped. The teacher was finally back and went white. He carried an armful of blunt objects and started passing them out.

"Now listen up! We have been prepared for this to happen for years now but no one though it was going to happen. There are going to be people trying to get in. They are not alive anymore. They are already dead so have no remorse. The best way to kill them is to damage the brain, so aim for the head."

As soon as he said that the door started shaking violently.

He turned towards me and handed me a handgun. "I've heard you have dead accuracy, is that true?" I nodded and stared at the gun. He smiled and took a lead pipe, "Fantastic."

Niki screamed as an arm burst a hole through the door. I let out an evil laugh and walked to the back of the room, taking aim and shooting. Her perfectly styled, blonde hair got stained red as her head exploded. Blood and bits of her flesh flew on nearby students and they started screaming.

The door burst open and fellow classmates and teachers with red eyes and body parts missing or bent at grotesque angles piled into the room. They latched on nearby students and began devouring them.

Let the killing spree begin.
