Praise pov
Time sure flies when you're having fun! I guess that how the expression goes but what a time I had today with Ireoluwa and Big bro Tega.
Today involved a lot of singing and laughs which only meant heartbreak when Ireoluwa opted to go home. It was almost seven o'clock.
"Call me when you get home!" I hugged her before opening the door for her. "Oga! Small small oh." I playfully suggested to the driver earning a slight laughter from him before the car zoomed off.
"Your friend seems nice?" Bro Tega broke the silence, we were doing the dishes in the kitchen.
"Yeah!" I replied. "How much do you like her?" he said but wait oh. Bro Tega is being chatty today.
"What are you getting at!" I stared at him. "You know?" he shrugged making hand gestures which if I'm decoding accurately meant we should hook up.
"I'll just assume you didn't do that just now." I felt irritated. "What!" he replied.
"she's a good girl and I love your chemistry!" he began rinsing the plates.
"That's what being friends mean!" I sarcastically replied drying my hands since I was done washing.
"Are you sure you're okay with her kissing that boy!"
"Wait first! How much of our conversation did you hear abeg!" I stared at him, maybe next time I'll start using coded language when next he's around cos I don't understand.
"I don't really care about who she gets with! I just want to attend that party!" I replied. "What's so important about the party? Girls! Alcohol! Sex! " he leaned on the counter beside me.
"it's not important." I feel he's asking to much questions at this point. "whenever you try to put a stop to questions it's that much important." he stated at me squinting his eyes.
"You're not planning on doing anything reckless are you....wait! Drugs!" Bro Tega, you can't get anything past his deductive mind. "what if its drugs?" I replied.
"Ebunoluwa I can't stand by while you do this! I'll have to tell...."
"Tell who!" I cut him off.
"My mom! Tolani! Bukunmi! Who exactly do you want to tell!" I raged. "I can't stand by and just allow you do this." this guy must be joking, after mom broke the news to me about not having money to pay for tuition.
"except you have half a million somewhere I suggest you relax and let me handle this!" Ever since dad died, I couldn't just sit back and watch the family wander off lost praying and hoping for a savior. I want to be that savior! No matter what it takes we must survive.
"Besides this isn't my first time taking care of myself !" I sat on the counter. "Ebun....! I can't understand what you had to go through after losing your dad but just promise me you'll be careful!" he patted my back leaving me alone in the kitchen.
I quickly rushed home to take care of a few things but I was absorbed into the darkness present in the living room and an unusual sound kept ringing in my ear so I located the light switch
"Wait! What!" I stared at Tolani kissing a stranger on the sofa. "Stop! My brother is watching." she replied after staring at me for a while. They weren't even moved by my presence.
"Who is that? Why is he here!" I pointed at the stranger. " This is Seun." she replied adjusting the shirt she had on, she gave off a huge sigh heading to the kitchen.
"I told you we should stay in your room but you insisted on coming here." he said. "we are fine! Ebun is a smart boy so we don't have to worry about a thing." she takes a sip of water.
"Why are you people talking about me like I'm not here!" I replied staring at them, I was more surprised about her composed she is about me catching them.
"So you just sneak guys in here whenever!" I stared at her seating down. "Ebun! I'm a grown woman and I have needs!" she crossed her legs. No wonder she doesn't let me into here room occasionally.
"I'm just worried about Bukunmi finding out ." she stroked her chin. "Why! She snuck someone here last week!" I shrugged.
"That bitch!" she banged her thigh. I have to admit living with sister's is really tough, sights like this were a constant reminder.
Most times I would catch them naked at night walking around sometimes eating comfortably in the kitchen at 3am, so you have to learn to get use to things.
"What are you doing here anyway! Thought you were sleeping over at Tega's place!" she yawned. "just came to take care of business before heading back." I replied.
"Always business with you!" she chuckled. "Mom nko?" I walked over to where she sat.
"Asleep in her room! She got arrived home about an hour ago!" she replied. "Good night Ebun.....and don't forget......" she was going to her room.
"I know!" I interrupted, everyone's secrets are safe with me.
I went to check up on mom in her room, seeing here this exhausted is heartbreaking because when dad was still with us she was living the dream although we didn't have everything but we were happy.
Birthdays and festivities were always fun because everyone would gather round singing songs with genuine smiles and family meals felt inviting and warm lately meals are cold as ever and everyone tries to cope with the pain of losing dad.
Even though my sisters do not admit it they keep having escapade with different guys so they won't have to deal with the pain of dad's death besides my sisters aren't people who moan and complain.
"Ebun!" mom woke up suddenly. "Bawo ni!" (How are you) she sat upright picking up glasses clearly exhausted.
"o ti pe ti mo ti re eh!" (it's been a while since I've seen you) she ushered me to come meet her. "Mo wa pa na!"(I'm alright) I replied but she knew I wasn't telling the truth cos mothers always know.
"Ebun! Ma pa ro fun mi! You're almost never around and you don't tell me things." (don't lie to me) she spat clearly frustrated.
"mummy mo wa alright! Mo busy pelu awon nko ko." (mummy I'm alright just busy with a few things.) I replied so she wouldn't have to worry because she already did so much for us.
"I really miss him too! Your father!" she teared up reaching for the picture frame on her bed side table.
"I miss him too!" I hugged her while she stared at the picture. "You remember when that boy in your class beat you up!" she chuckled slightly, how could I forget.
"No child has the right to treat my boy like that! I'll give the school a piece of my mind!" I tried to imitate dad to mom's amusement. "He was always the funny one." she placed his picture back on the table, I could tell she was tired.
"Good night mom!" I covered her up with the duvet before turning the lights off. I didn't bother going to bro Tega's place later that night.
The next morning after much pleading and blackmail my sisters finally agreed to help me make mom's Sunday easy. Which meant we had to work, Tolani handled laundry while Bukunmi and my humble self handled food and entertainment.
Bukunmi helped mom sort out yoruba movies which she would absolutely love while I was dishing out delicacies in the kitchen and believe me I am the best cook among the children.
Started her morning with bread, tea and fish sauce serving her jollof spaghetti in the afternoon while I had plans for rice as dinner.
"Ekale mummy!" (Good evening mummy) We all rose to rose to our feet to greet her, she walked into the living room that evening wearing a smile I haven't seen in a while after offering prayers to everyone she joined us to watch the movie.
We all laughed at the fact she found somethings strange and kept asking beginner questions but we were happy and together.
