It was Amanda who pointed out that he was in love with Johnny, but Daniel wasn't surprised that she figured it out long before he did. She was always the smart one in their relationship.
Daniel couldn't keep the smile off his face when Johnny called to tell him they were all safe and on their way back from Mexico.
"Wow," he said with a laugh. "I can't believe I actually missed Johnny. We've come a long way since the tournament."
"Hmm," Amanda hummed, then she walked away and two days later she arrived at Miyagi-Do with an envelope in her hand.
"What is this?" Daniel asked, as he flipped through the documents. "You're divorcing me?"
"Yes, I am," Amanda said coolly.
"I know things have been a little rough since the tournament," Daniel said desperately, "But come on, honey, please. Divorce?"
"Yes, Daniel," she replied curtly. "I'm divorcing you."
"Is this because of Terry Silver?" Daniel asked.
"Oh, Daniel," Amanda said with sigh. "This has nothing to do with Terry Silver, and everything to do with Johnny Lawrence."
"But..." Daniel started, barely able to understand. "Johnny and I, we're fine now. We're friends. We're..." His voice trailed off, as he found himself unable to pin down the word he was looking for.
"Exactly," Amanda said, pushing the papers back towards his chest. "You need to finish that statement, Daniel. What are you and Johnny these days?"
"We're teaching together," Daniel said. "We're... co-senseis."
"And is that all?" Amanda asked.
Daniel looked at her, confused by her question.
Amanda sighed, and as she walked away she said, "Call me when you've got the answer. Until then I think you should stay here."
Daniel didn't sleep that night. He spent the evening in the dark, sitting on the deck staring out over the garden, wondering where the hell he'd gone wrong.
Nothing had been the same since Johnny came back into his life.
Daniel had been so happy to see him, that day in the dealership. He'd given him the nicest looking Bonsai tree that he had, and cringed internally when he'd almost complimented his appearance. He was pretty sure Johnny had taken it the wrong way, and thought Daniel was being an asshole, but he wasn't.
After all these years, Johnny still looked amazing. Blessed with his good looks and blonde hair, even if he did have a scruffy bad boy beard and ripped jeans.
Then Johnny had reopened Cobra Kai, and Daniel had pretty much lost his mind. Even he could see that now, with the benefit of hindsight. It had brought it all back, everything he'd gone through in '85.
Dealing with Johnny in '84 had been bad enough, but what happened the following year had left scars on Daniel that he'd spent his whole life trying to forget. Seeing that snake, seeing that name up above the door, had sent him spiralling back into the nightmare of the torture that Kreese and Silver had put him through.
It took Daniel a while to realise that it wasn't actually Johnny he hated. Once they'd teamed up to defeat Kreese Daniel found that he actually quite liked him. He was loud and brash and maddening at times, but he was fun and under everything he had the kids best interest at heart, even if he did show it in strange ways that involved extreme heights, broken glass, and according to Eli a cement truck... he'd never quite understood that one.
