Self-harm is when somebody intentionally damages or injures their body. Support is always available for anyone who self-harms or thinks about self-harm, as well as their friends and family. Self-harming is never easy to stop or overcome, you may need a lot of support, but don't worry, you can do this!

Here is some ways that may help you to avoid it

Talk to someone

Try talking about your feelings to a friend, family member, trained volunteer or health professional. I know talking isn't always easy but talking can be done in more than one way, you can message them or even just write it down. But if you are hurting yourself you really need to talk to someone about it.

Find out what is making you want to do it

Try working out if feeling a certain way leads to your self-harm, for example, when you're feeling sad or anxious you could try expressing that emotion in a safer way like drawing or beating up a pillow.

Try breathing exercises

Try calming breathing exercises or other things you find relaxing to reduce feelings of anxiety (Look at anxiety chapter for a few examples)

Call a hotline/helpline

If you are thinking suicidal thoughts or thinking of self-harming you can call a variety of numbers depending on where you are. These helplines/hotlines are often open 24/7 everyday. If you feel like you cannot trust anyone to talk to that you know look up these numbers and find the ones available in your country.

Remember, hurting yourself will not make you feel better, in the words of Bang chan "Don't...don't hurt yourself... Just because you have a lot of stress doesn't mean that you have to relieve it by hurting yourself." Someone will always be here for you, a friend, a family member, your pet or even someone online, someone will always be there for you
