"Uh huh, wow, really. I'll tell her. Alright, bye bye." My mom let out a long sigh. "Well that was Aunt Lex, apparently Grandma died. " She turns to me waiting for me to react.
"Really, wow. That's a shame, especially before my birthday. I mean she anyways gives me 100 dollars for my birthday." I try to sound sad, but I really don't care, my grandmother never did anything for me, all she ever did was send money in the mail.
"Alexis Jane!" My mom yells at me. "I know she was never there, but show a little respect. And Aunt Lex said she did send something so it should be here soon..." My mom gets a far away look. She always does that when something dramatic happens. She says it helps her cope with the tough things in life.
"Mom, " I yell to snap her out f it. "You're doing it again."
"Sorry sweetie, just hoping she's not sending you, I'm sure she wouldn't, but, oh no." She looks around quickly. "Where is the phone? "
"In your hand, why?" I ask, concerned for my mother's health. She started dialing numbers quickly.
"Lex, please tell me-" Just then the doorbell rings. She scowls at me like it is my fault that the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it." I open up the door to find a package, addressed to me, from my grandmother. "Tell Aunt Lex that the package came." I start opening it, then look up, feeling my mother's eyes staring at me. "What?"
"Nothing," She says quickly. "What is it?"
"Don't know yet, can I open it?" My mom nods her head yes.
On top of a brown paper bag is a note.
"Alexis," I read it out loud "this has been in our family for many years. My mother gave it to me on my 16th birthday, I gave it to the twins-" My mom and Aunt Lex "on theirs and since your mother refused to take it to give it to you, I decided to mail it to you, to keep the tradition. I know you probably don't care about this gift or me dying-" I look at mom in utter shock, how did she know she was going to die today?
"Keep reading." My mom pushes the thought away.
"But I hope you will hang this in your room. Love Grandmama" I haven't called her that since I was six. Though she probably thinks I still do, because still she hasn't seen me since I was six.
I open up the package and hold up the object to my mom.
"Lex," my mom looks worried. "I have to call you back, it's the dream catcher. "
