It was a lonely day. Rose had packed up her things and had been dragged into her mom's car.
"Rosemary let's make sure this trip is done right! Did you pack your sunscreen and bug-spray?"
Her mother asked with her all too cheery eyes.
Rose hated when her mom made everything seem all sunny.
She sat up in her seat in the back that was far too dirty with crumbs and stains. Her hands immediately went in her lap at the sight.
"Yea mom. I checked my bag twice." She replied in her dreary voice. "Can't we just stay home for winter break?" She asked for the possible third time.
"No sweet heart. We talked about this." Her mother now sounding less happy.
Rose wanted desperately to run her fingers on the door handle and leave this car.
She loved her mom, just not right now.
"I think talking did no good." She replied deeply disappointed.
Her mother started the car in silence. Her eyes darted away from her daughter's in the mirror.
The car started and they were off.
Rose hated traveling. Her mind wandered to all the possibilities of destinations she rather go to.
Alas her mother chose Newport Rhode Island of all places...
Her eyes searched the empty country side after hours and hours of simple silence.
Her mom suddenly spoke "Darling we're almost there..". Roses eyes drifted over to her mom's in the rear view mirror. "Is it okay if I unpack before we eat?" She asked her mom in her best cheerful expression. She didn't want to make any more uncomfortable situations.
"Of course dear! We just need to get the bags when I find the hotel!" Her mother's voice finally back to its upbeat sound.
Rose smiled softly and looked out the car window seeing the water side so close. She wanted to walk out there so bad.
Her mother pulled up the car in a Hotels Parking lot. They simply got out of the car and carried their bags to the lobby.
Rose watched as her mom checked them in and followed her down a dusty 1980's style hallway.
The rugs could have easily been mistaken for a wallpaper pattern.
Her mom opened the door to there room and she walks into the room.
Just like the others. It was simply two beds next to each other. A bathroom in the corner. Then a window with curtains by the last bed.
She sat on the bed by the window and placed her bag on the floor.
"Hey mom?" She asked looking towards the other bed.
"Yes Dear?" Her mom said softly looking at Rose from whatever mom thing she was doing to the microwave.
"Is this place like old??" She laughed and smiled.
Her mother smiles back.
Why does she always smile..? Rose thought to herself as her mom replied.
"It's only around 20 years old. They replaced the furniture a lot though." Her mother said sweetly.
"Wow..." she said unsurprised.
The outside noises were only the cars driving by and waves crashing on the dock.
Did she mention there hotel was right next to to the dock? Because that's actually epic.
After unpacking she ran for the door carrying her satchel bag she got for her birthday that year.
"Mom, I know we still gotta eat. But can I walk on the docks and read?"
Her mom nodded swiftly as she was on her phone having the world's most important selection of food options.
"Be back!" She ran out the door to the exit door to the dock from the end of the hallway.
She smiled as the sky was bright and the water crashed against the dock's wooden pillars.
When she found a nice place to sit and read she opened her book.
Little did she know everything wasn't going to to be calm for long.
