"It only came because it was attracted by you Watanuki. Like all spirits. The snake found your presence irresistibly attractive. You look so delicious to them, they hunger for you." Something about that statement made Doumeki uncomfortable. Watanuki was delicious and irresistibly attractive. He couldn't find it in himself to deny it. Yuko continued putting a hand on Watanuki's shoulder. "And that's why I insist you take Doumeki."
Watanuki began pulling on his bandana. "But I don't like him! I don't want him coming with me everywhere!" Why does he hate me so much? And why do I like this idiot as much as I do?
"His presence counterbalances yours, he wards off evil spirits," Yuuko explained.
"But I wasn't even doing anything," Doumeki interjected quietly.
"Just because you weren't aware of it doesn't mean you weren't doing anything. You helped a lot. Watanuki wouldn't have been able to make it through such a heavy concentration of spirits by himself. Because you were there with him, Doumeki, he was able to make it through the spirits and up to the roof." He guessed that must have been true. He felt something on the roof but couldn't see it. He knew these things were real, even if it was beyond his five senses. He saw how much it affected Watanuki. It seemed like a terrible cross to bear. "Besides didn't you hurt your arm saving him up there?"
Doumeki looked from Yuuko to Watanuki who was glaring, but in a way that he knew he should probably thank Doumeki but his pride wouldn't let him.
Doumeki looked at the fork in his hand and back at Watanuki. "Sorry, did you want some?"
Watanuki started screaming again, "No, I don't want it! I don't need your leftovers!"
Kunogi chimed in, "You guys are so funny when you argue." Watanuki continued to gush over her and it hurt. Doumeki had already done more for him than she had. His arm was in a sling because of what he did, yet Watanuki still wouldn't look his way. It made a bad feeling well up inside of him. He didn't want him talking to her. So he interrupted.
"Hey."
Watanuki turned and snapped, "What do you want?"
"Seconds," he stated. He wasn't really that hungry, but he didn't want to keep watching Watanuki gush over Kunogi, and besides, Watanuki's cooking was excellent.
"You're already finished?! I haven't even gotten to eat anything yet!" Watanuki exclaimed in a huff. He felt a little bad that he imposed, but the darker feeling toward Kunogi won out. Then suddenly Watanuki turned and said, "Fine, wait there I'll make some more." Surprised he said yes.
He couldn't help egging him on so Watanuki would talk to him more. "Could you hurry?"
"Don't rush me!" Watanuki snapped.
Doumeki really hoped that as time went on, things might change between him and Watanuki. That Watanuki might see him as at least a friend, and not such a threat. He only wanted friendship from Watanuki but for some reason, Doumeki annoyed Watanuki so much. He wished he knew why so he could change it. Most times though it was unprovoked and unwarranted. Particularly in regard to Kunogi. He'd have to just want and see how things unfolded.
