In the shadow of the fallen Wall Maria, Trost District teemed with a deluge of refugees seeking sanctuary from the ravages of the titan onslaught on Shiganshina. Among the displaced, was me.
Sickness loomed over every alleyway, malnourished bodies draped in rags shuffled by, each step a testament to their fragile existence. Anguish etched the faces of the weary, their eyes haunted by the horrors witnessed beyond the breached walls.
Amidst the confines of the refuge, I've predominantly sought solace in seclusion. Here, among the assembly of displaced souls, resides the boy who vowed to obliterate the titans on the barge, accompanied by his two friends.
I had been quietly observing the group from a distance for some time, merely studying their interactions. It appeared as though the boy had abruptly emerged from a dream as he awoke with tears and a confused expression. His friends promptly clustered around him, evidently displaying concern and care for his disoriented state.
Man, I'm fucking hungry. I need to grab something to snack on.
I ventured towards the bustling stall dispensing rations and patiently queued up. As the line inched forward, I eventually received my allotted portion of bread. It was at that moment, while accepting the meager loaf, that a prickling sensation coursed through my arm - the very same arm that had been bitten by the spider just two days prior.
I didn't dwindle on the small bolt of pain that shot up my arm as I found a secluded area to sit down and nibble on the bread.
The undercover area wasn't too crowded with people. The sturdy stone walls not only offered a respite from the scorching sun but also delivered a welcome coolness, alleviating the stifling heat.
I glanced over quietly amused at the meltdown that angsty, brown-haired boy from this morning is having.
A faint chuckle escaped me as I observed the girl with her unique beauty, jet-black hair and a crimson scarf, assertively thrusting the loaf of bread into the boy's mouth.
In the distance, a mysterious figure, shrouded in a hoodie concealing their features, stood silently observing the scene unfold with an air of detached curiosity.
I took hesitant bites of the stale bread while the searing pain re-emerged and pulsed through my arm. The heat radiating from it intensified, accompanied by emerging signs of inflammation.
There is no way I am going to be able to get medical attention with the way things are right now in Trost. What am I going to do?!
Panic slowly began surging throughout my body but I kept it under wraps, gaslighting myself into thinking that this isn't going to harm me, or impact my ability to carry out this wish.
I consumed the final morsel of bread and drifted into a daze. My gaze fixated on the ceaseless movement within the crowd. Every face seemed to reflect a spectrum of despair or a lingering state of disbelief from the events of yesterday. Amidst the crowd, couples clung to each other, seeking solace, undoubtedly mourning the loss of their loved ones. Witnessing their embrace triggered a reflection on my own tragic loss.
My parents were my world. My life was devoid of any friendship, so, their presence was my only soul connection. The absence of both my sets of grandparents, lost to a devastating plague before my birth, exacerbated the desolation. A cure, discovered by Dr. Yeager, had been just a few days too late to save them.
A sudden wave of isolation engulfed me, wrenching forth silent tears. The corners off my mouth began quivering as I was overtaken by a profound sense of solitude, the pain of my heartache palpable. The ache in my arm was forgotten as I succumbed to the tears, my body curling in upon itself against the damp stone ground. Drained beyond measure, I gave in to the coolness of the stone wall, drifting into an exhausted slumber.
