Since they knew that he would spend a lot of time above the surface at night, Lachlan's brothers were quite surprised to see him arrive home so soon, but they made no mention of it as they watched him. Even though it seemed like nothing was wrong with him at first glance, the next few days showed a completely different side to Lachlan. They knew that he was quite interested in the human world, but when he started bringing Human Studies books to dinner and bumping into things because his nose was in a book, there was definitely something going on. This was not like Lachlan at all, and his whole family was confused about his change in behavior.

All of this was oblivious to Lachlan, since he spent his time thinking about Kaitlyn as he read more books about the human world, all while wanting to see her again. Of course, the two of them being different species was a roadblock whenever he thought of bringing her to his realm, but he kept that dream close to his heart as he studied. His curiosity also led to him swimming to the shore much more often than usual, taking care of his collection of human items while hoping to see Kaitlyn again. Since he had Kaitlyn's bracelet, he tried keeping it in his collection before deciding to wear it, and it looked as good on him as his necklace looked on her.

As time passed since their first meeting, Lachlan realized that he started feeling funny at the thought of Kaitlyn, like how the thought of her made his heart beat faster. He had studied in his books about humans falling in love, and even though he didn't know if what was going on inside of him was love, his friends and family underwater thought otherwise. From the twinkle in his eyes whenever they saw him glancing at the surface to the increase in love songs he was memorizing for a private performance, both traditional tunes and self-written songs about Kaitlyn, everyone but Lachlan could tell that he was smitten.

On one of his trips to the surface a few weeks after he last saw Kaitlyn, he passed by a patch of water lilies before picking one and swimming to the shore, where he reclined while playing with the flower's petals. As he grazed the petals with his fingers, he remembered how smooth Kaitlyn's fingers felt when she touched his cheek, and the flower was as pink as her cheeks when he complimented her giggle. With a happy sigh coming out of him at the memory of meeting her, he started singing a little ditty that he created about her, staring off into a daydream-like trance until he heard something approaching on the water.

"Is that you, Lachlan?"

A familiar voice called, causing Lachlan to gasp and look around before his eyes lit up when he saw Kaitlyn on her boat, now wearing her swimsuit instead of regular clothes. Thrilled to see her again while marveling at her new outfit, Lachlan nodded before gasping as she jumped out of the boat, only to watch as she pushed her boat onto the shore and crawled onto the shore beside it. As soon as she had gotten the water out of her eyes, she looked around for Lachlan before laughing as she hugged him, and he chuckled as he hugged her back. Even with the water droplets dotting her drenched swimsuit, her skin felt so smooth as they held each other, and he felt his heart skip a little faster at the thought of being back with her again. After they had pulled away, he looked at her with curiosity in his eyes as his mind filled with questions, but unsure of which question to ask her first.
