Four weeks since the school year had started. Neil was in his dorm, the one he shared with Todd. He was working on some physics. Or maybe Latin. He had no idea. The boy had been very busy with the Dead Poets Society this last week and hadn't focused on his studies. God, his father was going to kill him. At least he had his friends there. At least he had Todd there. Neil didn't know what it was but every time he looked at Todd, every time they talked, or just being in the same room, Neil felt safe. Maintaining eye contact with Todd was a privilege that very few could afford. Maybe only Neil could afford it. He didn't know. Todd didn't look at others much. At least not making eye contact. But with Neil he did. The brunette smiled at him every time. That made the blonde blush and look away. Which made Neil's heart break a little. Only a little. Neil felt like if he broke eye contact with Todd the world would end. But it never ended. They always looked at each other again. When Neil least expected it. It always took him by surprise. And he was always grateful. In the middle of class, at the dead poets' meetings, in the middle of the night, when they both thought the other was asleep, but then they opened their eyes and met each other's gaze in the darkness, even when Cameron wouldn't keep his mouth shut and the others became desperate, looking for help in someone's eyes. And Todd and Neil always chose each other. When they first met, Neil felt as if they had already been best friends in many parallel universes. Charlie found it crazy when Neil told him those things. Well, why was he thinking about these things? He had to study. Make his father proud before anything else. He realized he had wasted at least fifteen minutes thinking about Todd. Neil opened the book he had on the wooden table. He only had time to read a few measly lines before the door to the dorm opened. The boy raised his head, his round glasses slipping slightly from his nose, a few inches away from falling. It was Todd. Neil gave him a wide smile, showing his teeth. One of those goofy smiles of his that made him look like a little child at Christmas. Todd was his best friend, he deserved a smile like that.
