As they walked together, Dan was on edge. He knew it wasn't likely, but he was worried Austin or someone else from school would be watching them from the dark. He held his tail anxiously as he walked.
Phil was rambling about something, Dan was pretty sure it was geography homework, but he was finding it hard to focus on Phil's words. Suddenly he realized it was silent.
"Dan? Hello?"
"Sorry, what?"
"I asked if you were alright, you seem really scared."
"Oh. Yeah, it's fine."
"I won't let anyone hurt you, I promise."
"Thanks." Dan gave a small smile.
Phil turned off of the sidewalk and approached a house. "This one's mine."
Dan felt his heart begin to race as they approached the door, and Phil opened it. He led Dan inside.
Dan stood near the door feeling frozen in place. Phil called to his parents to let them know he was home. Dan's tail wrapped around his leg in fear as Phil's dad came around the corner.
"Is this your new friend?" He didn't seem upset, at least from what Dan could tell, and he could clearly see Dan was a neko, so that was a good sign.
"Yeah, this is Dan, we share a lot of classes."
"Alright. Your mum has set the table for all four of us. Dinner isn't anything special tonight, we just ordered a pizza." He walked into what Dan saw was a kitchen with a dining table in it. Phil led Dan to follow.
Dan felt awkward sitting at the table and eating while Phil told his parents about his day and how they met. He usually just ate on his sofa by himself at home, and the only sound was the TV. Every now and then Phil would glance at him, as if wanting him to say something, but he didn't push and Dan remained silent. Phil's parents were very kind after all, and seemed to notice he was feeling nervous. Then came the question Dan had been dreading.
"Why a neko? Wouldn't you rather be friends with other wolves? No offense to Dan of course, its just highly unusual for the two to mix." Phil's mum asked with a confused face.
"Well, Dan is nicer than the wolves at this school. Most of them are bullies towards the neko students." Phil said.
"I see, well in that case, I'm glad you've chosen to associate with someone who is kind rather than them." She smiled at Dan.
That had gone much better than he'd expected. Dan had really thought Phil's parents would be disappointed, or even angry about the fact that Dan was a neko. He supposed that even though his experience at school was bad, there were probably just as many good werewolves as there were neko.
After dinner, Phil led Dan to the door, and they talked as he walked Dan home.
"You okay? You didn't say a word the entire time we were at my house."
"Are you upset? I didn’t mean to be rude, I was just afraid."
"No, just worried."
"Oh, well, I wasn't sure what to say to be honest." Dan held his tail anxiously again.
"That's alright. My family seemed to like you anyway." Phil smiled.
A stick cracked nearby, causing Dan to jump. Phil growled, looking for danger with his ears perked up and listening. When he noticed it was a rabbit, he laughed.
"It's alright, just a bunny."
"Yeah." Dan said, letting the breath he has been holding go.
They arrived at Dan's house.
"I'll pick you up for school tomorrow, if you'd like." Phil said.
"Yeah," Dan smiled. "That sounds nice."
Phil waved as Dan approached his front door. Dan waved back before heading inside.
Short chapter I know but they won't all be this short guys, I promise
