Earlier that day, Max was gossiping to you about how Mike has never brought a girl or guy over, hinting to you that she thinks you should make a move. You think it's a cheap shot, that he would take interest in someone like you based on how closed off he is around you.Besides, you were not in highschool anymore - if you were going to make a move on someone, you wanted it to be somebody you are sure won't be just a fling! You and Mike had just met, you couldn't make that kind of judgement yet. Looks aren't all that matter to you... but he sure does check off that box. And he was super nice to your the other day with the whole blanket thing.
Breaking your train of thought, Mike opens the door before you could even knock! God, he must think you are a werido just standing there. "Hey, can you cook macaroni?" is how Mike greeted you.. maybe he is the weirdo .... maybe you like weirdos-
"Yeah, why? Did VIP customer, Abby, request it?" You chuckle, but nods seriously, "I usually wouldn't let her boss me around, but we made a deal and I didn't want to leave you alone with a boiling pot if you didn't know what to do with it." Mike says will a hint of concern in his tone.
He signals for you to step inside the kitchen, where he has a pot of water boiling on the stove, a wooden spoon, and a box of Craft. "I've got to go now, but uh- call me when you're finished with that.. just wanna make nothing happens.. you know?" Abby was right, he really is a worry-wart! You found it kind of sweet, but also wondered if he didn't think you could handle yourself.
You think about what you said to Abby yesterday...
"Mike get so worried all the time"
"That just means he loves you"
Stop being delusional! You just met and you don't even like him like that... yet?You open the box of Craft and pour the raw noodles into the boiling water, placing the wooden spoon over the pot so that it doesn't bubble over. Then you turn around and realize that Mike was still there, watching you, which made you slightly insecure? Was something wrong? Did he still not trust you by a stove? Or was it your hair or outfit? You had wore more comfortable clothes then yesterday, so that you could fall asleep easier, but now you'd wished you hadn't...
Mike realizes that you noticed him staring, and quickly looks away, clearing his throat. "S-..something wrong?" You get up the courage to ask him, mentally face-palming for your little stutter that was caused by the fear that he was judging you.
"No, I just.. Sorry if I uh- made you uncomfortable the other day." Mike says, relieving your worries about yourself and replacing them with curiosity - what was he talking about?
"When you hung up, I wasn't trying to invade or anything.."
Oh my god, he was talking about the stuffed animal thing!"No it's fine- it's just, not something most people have... it's a- slightly humiliating." You respond, trying to find a way to steer this conversation away from you.
"Not really- I mean, it's kinda like a souvenir." Mike adds in - You wondered why he was still talking about this? Was he really that worried about making you uncomfortable?"...I've got one from my childhood but, it's not exactly mine. It was my brothers" Mike continued, while looking down at his feet. Was he implying that he had a brother who passed away? You didn't want to ask if it was a touchy topic so, you say what anyone would say in the situation,
"Sorry, Mike" You place a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to be comforting rather than awkward like how it turned out.
"It's not your fault." He say with a slightly chuckle but, you could tell there was a pained tone behind it; As if he was using humor to cope? You wonder why he chose to share this with you but, whatever the reason, you were appreciative of it. Was he beginning to trust you or take an interest in you?
"Did- Do you have any siblings?" Mike asks you, clearly trying to change the topic off of him so he didn't get too emotional.
"I have an older sibling... used to have a younger one but, he passed - too young." You open up to him just as he had opened up to you."What a strange, dark thing for two people to relate and connect on." Mike chimes in with a chuckle but, this time, it didn't have a pained tone behind it.
You giggle at his comment before your body acted and your mind didn't; Maybe it was the intimacy of the moment but, suddenly, you and Mike hug. It was a comfortable hug, not awkward like your usual interactions. You break the hug when you hear a drop of water from the pot drip onto the stove, meaning the pasta needed to be stirred. As you grab the spoon to start stirring, you notice that Abby was standing in the hall!
"Are you and Mike-" Abby begins to ask but, you and Mike both quickly respond, "No!"
