Just After Season 2, Episode 6

October 2006

It was later that fall, October to be precise, when the team was called in on a case where a murderer was hunting down and killing children from a small town. It was a hard case, made harder by the fact that the killer turned out to be a child himself.

As JJ worked with the parents of the town who had lost children, and who's children were missing, she thought about how much she would give to be able to just put those sweet babies back into their parents loving arms. This lead her to think of Liddi, but she was on a case and had to focus, so she pushed that aside.

Later, as they prepared to travel home, she approached Reid at the station, "Hey, Spence, do cases like this ever get to you, I don't know... like the ones with kids... more than others I mean."

"I mean it's always sad, and I guess it's harder to see happen to a kid, but... I don't know, it's the job. Is everything alright, JJ?."

"I was just so relieved we got to return Tracy to her parents unharmed, I just wish we could do that more often... protect them I mean."

"You thinking about Liddi?"

"Ya, I just... I don't want her out there undefended, Spence."

"I'm sorry JJ... but I just don't get it." He swung his bag over his shoulder, "We see bad stuff happen all the time, why is this one child getting to you."

"I just want to save her. She deserves that. I'm not giving up on her." JJ walked away, a little irritated he couldn't understand why she cared.

Later, Morgan noticed his opportunity when JJ was sitting by herself on the jet. Approaching quietly, he flopped into the seat across from her, "Hey, JJ, good job on the case today. Small towns are always hard to navigate. We'd be seriously lost without you."

"Thanks, Morgan." She looked up from her book and put it down on the table, then drawing her blanket closer arround her, "but that's not what you came over here for, is it? Just to complement me?"

"Nah, ya caught me," he grinned, but then his look softened, "I overheard you and Reid talking earlier."

"Oh... ya... that."

"Ya that." He said jokingly. "Honest question, JJ, what is it about this kid that has you all in knots, you can't seem to get over it."

"I don't know... Morgan, I just... I need her to be okay." She felt almost embarrassed for what she was saying, and although she knew she shouldn't be, she was still sure Morgan would lecture her for being too attached or not objective enough.

"You're gonna make a great mother, you know that?"

Well that was not what she expexted. She gave him a puzzled look.

"I mean you're so instinctively protective, so 'mama bear'." He sighed, knowing how that had to sound, "I'm just saying you're a good person and I think you would make a great mom, for what it's worth. And maybe that's why you are so passionate about finding that little girl. You know she needs you." He smiled genuinely.

"Well, I'm glad that's what you were saying Morgan, cause for a minute there it sounded like you wanted me to have your child..." he got flustered as she teased, "and I just couldn't... Penelope would be furious!"

This got a chuckle from Gideon, who had happened to listen in.

"Okay, okay, JJ, I see how it is." He laughed as he got up, "All the jokes..." He laughed again as he went to get some coffee from the back of the jet.

JJ chuckled at her own little joke as she snuggled back into her blanket and brought her book back up, but she left it closed as she got distracted staring out the window... Liddi was out there... and she did need someone to save her...

'Me? A mom?' JJ thought... 'Nah, I'm too young... besides, Liddi has a family... if we can just find her.'
