"Tell me you love me....and I'll leave you alone." My ears are deceiving me right now. I can't believe that I'm being put in this position. It all started out as a simple working relationship.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.
"You know it doesn't work like that. I'm damn near engaged."
"That's not what I asked you, Tevin. I asked you do you love me? Its just that simple. Why can't you just say it. C'mon Tevin, don't do this to yourself."
"I'm not doing anything to myself. I already told you...."
"You ain't tell me shit, baby."
"Don't call me that. Just...don't."
"Why, huh? I can't call you baby now? I can't show my affection all of a sudden? Then what have we been doing for four months Tevin? Every glance, every kiss, every conversation and every bit of comfort I've shown you has been in vain? I'm not stupid Tevin, so don't treat me like an idiot."
"I never said you were an idiot, but you need to come to grips with reality. We are n-not what you think..."
"Tell me you love me. I wanna hear it. Not no damn excuses, no cute little way to change the subject. For once in four months, I want the truth. Do you love me?"
"Yeah Freshman, do you love him?" I immediately turn to see a angry Marcus standing in the doorway of my townhouse. "Marcus, baby I.."
"Answer him, Tevin."
"Yeah...answer me, Tevin."
HOW DID I GET HERE?
---------5 MONTHS EARLIER----------
"Its gonna be lame without you here baby," Tevin tells Marcus. And to be honest, it will be. 'Why did Marcus, Money and everybody have to graduate' he thought. Sure, its been three and a half years since the upperclassmen been on campus, but it still hurt Tevin being the only one left. He felt like a nobody.
"You been saying that for 3 years straight, Freshman," Marcus said over the phone. He became part of the offensive coaching staff for the New York Jets after graduation just to be near Tevin.
"I know Marcus, but it just doesn't feel the same. You in New York, Money moved to L.A. for his public relations company, Travis moving to Dubai with his wife, and with Trey and Tito working non-stop, I don't get to see anybody anymore. Dont even get me started on Vanessa."
"Freshman, your sister is now CEO of her own label, Trey & Tito promote all over town now, and Im only a flight away. You GOT to chill out. You a senior now. You got to stay focused and graduate. Its what your mother wants; its also what your father and Jaden would have wanted."
Tevin's heart swelled up at the very mention of Jaden. No one knew how serious his migraines were. So when everyone found out it was tumor-related, it took everyone by surprise. So when the untimely end came, it shook Tevin to the core. He has known Jaden since they were in diapers. He was Tevin's voice of reason; he even convinced Tevin to stick it out with Marcus. Jaden's passing left a huge whole in his heart....and he hasn't been the same since.
Still, he has to keep pushing. Its what Jaden would've wanted.
"You're right babe. I guess Im just reeling right now. It just gets so quiet around here. Fisk is not the same as it was when you were here. Its like groundhog day everyday. Its no excitement."
"No worries, its only been the first three weeks. Everything will pop off as soon as possible. Besides, homecoming is in a month or two. You know we'll be there to turn up."
"Babe....eww...no one says turn up anymore. That died out," he said laughing.
"Whatever, I still say it. You know Im country."
"Yeah yeah yeah. So...how's the team doing? I feel like I never get a chance to ask about you cause the conversation always about me."
"Thats cause you ALWAYS calling about yourself while Im trying to work." Offended, Tevin scoffed and looked at the phone as if his boyfriend lost his ever loving mind. "I do NOT interrupt your work flow. Take that shit back!"
"So you mean to tell me your spoiled rotten ass didn't call me during a goddamn playoff game during Prime time Television to ask how to work the dishwasher?"
"No I dont recall that."
"Yes you do"
"No I dont."
"Yes you do."
"NO I DONT!"
"YES THE FUCK YOU DO!"
"WHO YOU TALKIN' TO, FOOL?"
"YOU FOOL!! My baby, my boyfriend, my love, my sexy lil' New York apple. The one who interrupts my job with his 'damsel-in-distress' antics that turn me on cause I get to hear your voice and see your face during FaceTime."
Beginning to blush, Tevin realized how whipped he was for even falling for Marcus' flirting. Maybe abscence does make the heart grow fonder, because Tevin decided to just eat crow for the moment and let Marcus have his way (yet again).
"Uggh fine! Sure I called you about the dishwasher or whatever. But hey! at least it was during halftime."
"Freshman, it was two minutes left in the 4th quarter. Bad timing baby, bad timing."
"Yeah yeah yeah. So....again, how's the team this year?"
"Sorry as fuck."
"Marcus!!! Dont say that! You're on the coaching staff."
"So? That dont mean a nigga cant be honest. You know why Im here. I came to do my job and get my check. We got great young talent that the head coach dont wanna use because he trying to cater to these damn primadonnas around here that should've retired 10 years ago."
"If that aint the pot calling the kettle black! I distinctively remember being knocked to the ground by BIG DADDY MARCUS, only to be told to stay in my lane, outta your way, to hear that you run the entire campus and showing your dick print in my face when I questioned your status. Mind you, this was the FIRST DAY I MET YOU!!!"
"Your point?"
"My point is you just don't act like a primadonna; you the blueprint."
"Yeah, but I was at least sexy with it."
"Oh my God. What the hell am I gonna do with you?"
"In two months, anything you want, baby." The conversation went on like that for 30 more minutes before Tevin and Marcus said their goodbyes. Honestly, Tevin felt more peaceful with being a senior at Fisk when he could call Marcus to vent. He felt lucky.
Scratch that: he knew it.
