*Ven*

It's quiet.

The grass and scarce trees stand still in the absence of a breeze.

Mountains in the distance stab into the sky, defending the border between us and them.

The rest of the world.

We've all heard the stories.

The big war.

It has a name, some really specific name.

Or a general name?

I never was good at history.

No one can say they won it, though.

No one would want to.

"I didn't think it'd be so..." Marney makes a vague gesture with her hands.

"Yeah, me either," my eyes scan across the horizon.

"Everyone's watching us..." Jacob whispers.

The whole town had gathered to have a look.

"Not us," Marney hisses, "just him." She jerks her thumb at me.

"You're not wrong," I say absently.

This place is empty.

There's nothing here.

There's no one here.

So why are we here?

It sets my teeth on edge.

My stomach is doing flips.

"I'll go check it out," I lick my lips nervously, "alone."

"Totally alone," Marney steps up next to me.

Jacob mumbles something and stands beside me.

"No, I mean it, you two stay here," I point at the ground.

"Yep, we're staying right here." She points at me.

I sigh in defeat.

"Well then, let's walk into this trap of a country," I concede, hoping that will at least make Jacob stay.

The three of us step off the edge of the Caravan Palace.

The ground opens up beneath us, a great gaping maw of pitch blackness.

"Uh oh," I mutter.

Marney swears loudly.

Jacob whimpers.

We fall.

The hole closes behind us.

Silence deafens me.

I can hear the others, but in this perfect darkness I can't tell if my eyes are open or not.

My stomach tosses and turns.

"What's happening!" Jacob screams.

"Very loud, Jacob," I try to hold my stomach and cover my ears at the same time, I just end up with one ear covered and a hand on my stomach.

"Something touched me!" He screeches.

"What!?" Panic sets in.

Monsters loom at me unseen in the darkness.

Out of sight.

But there.

Wait, no, there's nothing.

There's nothing!

But what if there is?

A cold sweat soaks through my clothes.
