"matt, you hang out with y/n more than you hang out with me," chris rolls his eyes.

"honey, leave him alone. he's nice to the neighbor, that's all. plus, we just got back and she missed him." marylou smiles.

"i don't want you guys to think i'm nice to her because i feel bad for her, that's not why i'm friends with her. we were in L.A. for almost a year." matt explains.

"don't worry, matty, that's not what we think. not what i think at least. you're very good to her, you should give her your phone number so you two can stay in touch while you guys are in L.A. sometimes." marylou says. matt sighs.

"i almost want to stop being friends with her so people will leave me alone," matt mumbles.

"what?" chris asks.

"people never stop bothering me about her. they say she's too fucking young for me, even though it's not like that." matt sighs.

"i don't think she's too f-ing young for you, matt." marylou says, looking at him. "even if it is like that. don't stop being friends with her because of other people,"

"see, people don't believe me either... they think i'm in love with her." matt rolls his eyes. chris and marylou give each other a knowing look but turn back to matt.

"why's that a bad thing?" chris asks as he crosses his arms.

"because people think i'm weird-"

"who cares what people think?" chris shrugs. "do whatever you want, if you like her, be with her. who are you talking about when you say 'people'?" he asks.

"people... like our if our fans ever found out and people at school." matt shakes his head.

"chris is right though. at the end of the day, age is just a number." marylou says. she's always seen the very obvious feelings matt has had for you, she could tell since the day you moved in and came over for dinner. the way matt looked at you was so adorable to her. marylou and annie always talked about how cute you two would be together, and how excited they'd be to be in-laws one day, hopefully.

age is just a number.

the same sentence that everyone tells matt when he explains the way people react to the both of you being friends. he hates how every time someone sees a boy and girl friendship, they feel the need to ship you guys or assume you and matt like each other. he's seventeen and you're fifteen, he still feels weird thinking about it although it's not that big of an age gap. he's a senior, you're a sophomore. maybe he's making an excuse for himself to not like you.

"matt," you look up at him. he's about to leave for L.A. for the first time. you have no idea when you'll see him again, but by the way he's wording it, it won't be for a long time. he hasn't said the words 'soon', 'before you know it', or 'it'll go by fast'. you already know what he'll say next.

"i promise, y/n. i'll be back." he says. he still didn't say 'soon'. "is there anything you want from a souvenir shop while i'm there?" he asks, trying to lighten the mood to get rid of the tears in your eyes. although you shake your head, he questions you again. "are you sure?"

"just find something you think i would like... just don't forget about me, matt. you have to come back someday to visit me." you say, looking into his eyes. his eyes soften and he inhales as he wraps his arms around you in a tight hug. he's never hugged you before, but you loved this.
