"You're insufferable."
"Maybe," he says softly, "but you still can't keep your eyes off me."
"Maybe I don't want to."

I was sprawled on my couch, taking long sips from my glass of whiskey while trying to finish the last chapter of my novel. I'd hoped it would make me feel happy, but the sirens and shouting outside were killing my mood. With a groan, I took another sip, staring at the blinking cursor on my laptop.
Then my phone buzzed on the coffee table, and I grumbled, assuming it was another call from my cousin about some mafia crap. But when I saw the name on the screen, I almost choked on my drink.
Detective James Carter
"Seriously?" I muttered, picking up the phone. "What do you want, Carter?"
"Marco," James's voice was all business. "We need to talk. Now."
I sat up, irritation flaring. "And why would I want to talk to you?"
"It's about your father," James said, his tone tight. "Enzo's been arrested."
My glass slipped from my fingers, shattering on the floor. I barely noticed. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Mayor Vincent's dead," James continued, "Your father's the prime suspect."
My mind was racing. Enzo Rossi, my old man, accused of murdering the mayor? It didn't make sense. Enzo was many things, but reckless wasn't one of them.
"I don't believe you," I snapped. "My father wouldn't be that stupid."
"Meet me at the station," James said, ignoring my outburst. "We need to discuss this in person."
Before I could respond, James hung up. I stared at the phone, my heart pounding.
This couldn't be happening.
I grabbed my coat and bolted out of my apartment. I drove to the police station, my thoughts a mess. The relationship I had with my father was strained at best. We had our fair share of arguments, and his criminal life was something I had always struggled with. But I never imagined it would come to this.
When I arrived, I pushed my way through, eyes scanning for James. I found him in a cluttered office, hunched over a pile of files.
As soon as he looked up, I was reminded of just how damn attractive he was.
James Carter was the kind of guy who looked like he'd walked straight out of a book. He was tall, built like he spent more time in the gym than in an office. His suit clung to his muscular frame, the kind of physique that made me look like an ant in comparison. His dark hair was messed up but that somehow made him look even better, and those piercing blue eyes
which were looking right at me.
I coughed, "What's this about?"
James's expression turned serious. "Your father was the last person to see Vincent Romano. And to make matters worse, his prints were found in the apartment. It's the last evidence we have linking him to the scene."
I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. "Wait, his prints? That could be from before—"
James cut me off. "I get that, but right now, the evidence isn't looking good. I'm going to figure this out but I would like your help."
I stared at him. "So what do you need from me?" I asked, "Why do you my help, exactly?"
James leaned forward, "Because you know him best. If someone's framing him, Wouldn't you like to clear his name? Your father may not be the best dad, but if he's innocent, he deserves a chance to prove it." He leans back again, "I mean, be my guest if you want him to spend his life his prison."
I took a deep breath, "Fine. I'll help. But what are you getting out of this?"
"If I solve this case, I would get a big promotion. If that's all, Let's get to work."
I raised an eyebrow, skeptical, "So you're doing this for a promotion?"
James shrugged slightly, "Among other things. But the bottom line is, we both want the truth. So let's get to it."
This whole situation was a mess, but if there was even a hint of truth in what James said, I had to clear my father's name.
Even if it meant dealing with James fucking Carter.

I sat at my desk and began to write in my diary.
Entry #1
1) Dad's Prints Found -Dad's print were found in the apartment (Could be from before as they did business together)
2) Parking ticket near the house -Parking ticket had been issued a few hours before the murder.
3) Witness Statements and cameras -Camera show he was the last person to see him. (Murderer could've disabled cameras)
Before I could write any further, my phone buzzed. I picked it up, looking at a message from James.
Bitchface 🕵️: Meet tmrw?
Me: 10? Coffee shop?
Bitchface: Ok.
I groaned. Why did he text like he'd just discovered texting yesterday? It was like communicating with a robot.
I could do this. I'm patient.
So patient.
I tossed my phone aside and tried to concentrate on my notes. Tomorrow's meeting with James was probably going to be a pain, but if it helped crack this case, it'd be worth it.
