I was sitting next to my friend, laughing at the joke they had just made. It wasn't even funny, but it was one of those moments where you laughed anyway because everyone else was.

The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. I tossed my uneaten sandwich into the trash, trying not to think about the hunger gnawing at me. I had a role to play, and right now, it was about fitting in.

"Hey, Marco, are you coming to gym class?" Jake called out, his voice filled with that constant energy of his. He was always bouncing around, turning everything into a challenge or a joke.

I shrugged, shoving my hands into my pockets. "Yeah, I'll be there in a minute."

Jake smirked, giving me a playful shove. "Come on, don't keep us waiting."

As we made our way to the gym, I noticed a kid I didn't recognize standing by the bleachers. He was alone, looking out of place in his oversized jacket and scuffed sneakers. His awkward stance made him stand out even more in the busy gym.

"Hey, Marco," Jake said, nudging me with his elbow. "Check it out. New kid."

"Hm, yeah," I replied, my eyes narrowing slightly as I took in the kid's appearance. "What's his name?"

"I think James. Heard he doesn't have any friends. Fucking loser," Jake said with a dismissive wave.

"Yeah, totally," I agreed.

The gym was our usual scene—basketball games, shouting, and the constant competition. I played hard, trying to win.

The game was fun, but my attention kept drifting back to the new kid, James. He was still standing there, watching from a distance.

It was another one of those typical afternoons—loud and rowdy as we all gathered at Jake's house for our usual hangout. We were playing Truth or Dare, and the living room was cluttered with snacks, soda cans and beers.

I was lounging on the couch, trying to focus on the conversation while half-listening to the conversation.

"Alright, my turn!" exclaimed Mark, one of the guys from our group, as he spun the bottle. It slowed to a stop, pointing at me. "Marco, truth or dare?"

I sighed, bracing myself for whatever was coming. "Dare," I said.

Mark's eyes lit up, "I dare you to try to befriend the new kid, James. I saw him checking you out earlier. He's probably a gay or something. Go talk to him and see if you can get him to like you."

A burst of laughter erupted from the group. I could feel my face heat up, both from the embarrassment of the dare and the awkwardness. The whole room was watching me, clearly finding this hilarious.
