SUICIDEMARGARET SAYWER DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS LIFE.
She didn't ask to loose her mother at such a young age to a serious disease that no one seemed to know about. She didn't ask to be injected with a deadly compound which would give her even more deadly abilities. She didn't ask for such a secretive and shitty father. Margaret didn't ask for any of it. Even so, the universe still devices to fuck her over and give her such a shitty life that she contemplated on taking it every other day. Because what was there to truly live for? Being a superhero? No, Margaret didn't want any of that. She didn't want to fight crime like her mother did and save the world. She wanted to become a psychologist, someone who would help those in need without having to use her superhuman abilities.
But would she be able to do any of that?
Fuck no. Instead, her father, Richard Sawyer, forced his daughter to accommodate to the lifestyle of being a superhero, teaching her how to harvest and control her powers for as long as she could possibly remember (which was manipulating and controlling gravity, a super safe and totally not world ending threat of a power!) and hardly ever giving her a chance to enjoy her life just like every child deserves. For this reason, Margaret despised her father. It was bad enough he hardly even spoke about her mother anymore, instead deciding to lay in bed at night with random women who came and went (gross) but to also treat his daughter like a lab rat instead of a human being? That was crossing the fucking line. Despite the hatred Margaret held for her father, she still did everything she asked like daddy's perfect little girl, because what else could she do? Rebel and face consequences that she didn't even want to think about? Absolutely not.
Being a superhero in the making came with many downsides, one of which was being paraded around and forced to pretend as if you actually enjoyed your life. Fun. Like many other things in the world, Margaret hated galas and fundraisers. It was stupid, fake, and......did she say mention stupid? Richard didn't care though. He needed publicity, popularity in the eyes of a press, even if it meant making his daughter miserable in the process.
There was one gala that Margaret would never forget however. She was only fifteen, fresh into her teenage years and angry at everyone and everything (mainly her father, but what else was new?) Margaret could remember sitting at the bar even at her young age, watching everyone around her get drunk and discuss matters that probably weren't even all that relevant to them, but would most likely get them brownie points with the rich kids.
That was when he showed up.
Sam Riordan, in all of his gorgeous glory, sat beside Margaret as she sipped on her cheap sparkling cider. As soon as the two locked eyes with each other, they just knew. They knew that they were going to end up together and that they erred going to hit it off. Margaret never believed in love at first sight or any of that other bullshit, but fuck, Sam had to have been the most gorgeous person she ever had the privilege of laying her eyes on.
Sam couldn't help but feel the same way. Margaret was gorgeous, someone he would see in those weird magazines his brother liked to keep tucked away under his bed in hopes no one would find it. Love blossomed in the two teens chests, which is how they managed to hit it off so quickly. They told each other everything. Their likes, dislikes, dreams for the future, their unfortunate superpowers. Anything that wasn't too personal or overbearing, they shared with one another.
It got up to a point where Sam just had to make Margaret his. And so on Christmas, the duo shared their first kiss under the mistletoe. It was cheesy, magical, a little bit dorky as well, none of that mattered, because they had each other. Margaret was never going to let Sam go, just like Sam was never going to let Margaret go.
That was until Margaret's sixteenth birthday, the day that Sam had "died." That was the day when her once warm and kind heart became cold as ice once more, pushing away anyone that tried to enter and grow close to her once more. When Margaret first learned of Sam's death, she quite literally refused to believe it. Instead, she went on with her life as if Sam was still with her, talking and laughing with the air as if he was still sitting next to her. People sympathized, but at some point it did grow a little scary.
Eventually Margaret had to move on with her life, for that's what Sam would've wanted. And so she enrolled in Godolkin University, the same college her mother had graduated from in order to become a superhero. Margaret had one goal in mind:stay out of everyone's way and complete her four years of education just like Sam would've wanted.
But when Luke Riordian, Sam's older brother commits suicide in the middle of the sky, he leaves behind a set of mysteries and clues that exposes the truth about the kind of university that Godolkin truly is. And it's up to Margaret and her friends to get to the bottom of it, while also saving the love of her life in the process.
