WHEN THE ALPHA, MIN YOONGI, told of the rogues that had attacked his village, Jimin felt his heart drop in his chest. An entire pack village had been massacred, the Black Mountain pack was facing a long and hungry winter, and rogues were the cause of it.
It seemed like there was no end to Jimin's misfortune. When the pack heard this news their hate for him would only grow.
And when Min Yoongi learned that the omega who had tended his wounds was rogue-born, surely the alpha would want to kill him.
The unpleasant scent of Jimin's fear began to cloud the room, and his pulse grew so loud in his ears that he barely heard Alpha Ryu apologizing for him, ordering that Jimin be removed. Someone grabbed his arm and he was tugged out into the dimly lit hallway.
The grip on his arm released and Jimin crumbled against the wall, breathing ragged.
"What's wrong with you?" Sejin whispered, annoyed. "Are you really too weak and soft to hear about a few deaths?"
Jimin just shook his head, glancing around to make sure that they weren't alone. It was late into the night, so there were no servants in sight, but a beta guard was posted at one end of the hall, so at least Sejin would not be able to say or do anything too indecent.
"Perhaps we should go someplace where you can calm down," the alpha growled, reaching out for him again.
"N-no," Jimin shrank away and wiped away a few tears with his sleeve, "I'm sorry I couldn't control myself I just... need a moment."
Sejin scowled, casting a look at the guard and crossing his arms. "I should be with father right now, not dealing with you, like a maiden watching a pup."
We are a burden, Jimin's wolf whined remorsefully, and that only served to make him angry, a distraction from his fear.
"I didn't ask you to be here," Jimin answered, "You can go back inside."
Please go back.
"Father's orders."
"I'll be fine. And I would like to be alone for a moment."
"You talk boldly for an omega," Sejin hissed, his smokey scent turning slightly bitter.
Jimin flushed at that, and said nothing.
A tense minute of silence passed between them.
Then door to the guest room slid open and Alpha Ryu emerged. He frowned at Jimin, who stood with his arms wrapped around himself, gaze fixed on the polished wood floorboards under his feet. The omega was clearly uncomfortable.
The pack alpha looked to his son, eyebrows raised in a question. Sejin just shrugged.
"Well, he is asleep again," Alpha Ryu explained, gesturing to the room, "He has lost a great deal of strength, and I think our conversation was quite taxing for him. At least we finally have learned what we needed to know of the attack."
Jimin winced, and Alpha Ryu softened his tone.
"Jimin."
The omega lifted his head nervously.
"I often forget that, as an omega, you are more sensitive to the grief of others. I know it must have been upsetting to hear of so many deaths, but I need you to be stronger than this. Hyun-Joo thinks that you can still be of great help, so you will continue to stay here for the time being."
"Yes Alpha," Jimin murmured.
When Alpha Ryu and Sejin had left for the night, Jimin stepped back into the guest quarters. He felt a stab of guilt when he saw Hyun-Joo refastening a window. Apparently had been necessary to clear the air of Jimin's distressed pheromones and now a cold draft filled the room.
