Chapter 7: Oh
"Did you and Tofunmi fight?"
Ife watched Mofe's reaction to the question very carefully. She seemed to have choked, for just a second, on the garri she was sharing with Ife.
Ife passed her a bottle of water.
"I think you're like the hundredth person that's asked me that question this week."
"That's not surprising. You guys were like joined at the hip until last week. And I noticed you avoided him at church," she smiled."Who else asked?"
After a minute of thinking, she replied:
"Um...what's that boy's name? You know that one boy that thinks he's fine but isn't fine?"
Ife rolled her eyes."There are plenty boys like that in this school, Mofe. You have to be way more specific. There's Mustaphar, Timi, Abubakar, oh and especially Tofu-"
"The one that obviously has a crush on Abena and Abena has been using him to buy puff-puff."
"Huhhh? Abena said she doesn't like puff-puff!"
"I know! She always said so in Junior school. That's what I sha heard."
"From whom did you hear such?"
Mofe's smile wavered a bit."Oh, from Fu-Tofunmi...when we were still talking." Ife didn't notice Mofe's stutter.
"OH MY GO-"
"Ehen, Ejiro. That's his name. Ejiro."
"Oh."
"Oh?"
"I don't think we're talking about the same person."
"Oh," Mofe agreed.
"Chai."
"Chai."
They both looked up from the bowl of garri and broke out in laughter.
"Anyways, who else?"
It felt nice speaking to Mofe. She felt safe.
"So, Ejiro asked...and so did Ahmed and Victory."
"Isn't Victory Abena's friend?"
"Yeah."
They gave each other a knowing look.
Ife hissed."They're looking for gist"
"Isn't everyone?" Mofe laughed, pouring in more groundnut to their garri .
"Did anyone else ask?"
Mofe squinted her eyes."I don't understand. Did you send people to come and ask me abi what?"
"Ibukun didn't ask you?"
"No...why?"
"He just seemed...worried. He just seemed a bit worried when you left dining that day."
"Oh."
Ife had just walked into dining with the other prefects when she heard Aisha call her name.
"Ife, come now!"
They had come a tad bit late-courtesy of the head boy who decided to have a meeting during break.
As she just stepped forward, she saw Mofe zoom past her looking like she was about to burst into tears. She was about to follow her but was stopped by Ibukun who held her hand.
"Leave her." His eyes looked pleading.
She nodded silently, for some reason, not wanting to question his wishes. Why? Ife was yet to understand.
