It had been a good idea to seek shelter on of the hills that interrupted the marsh land for two reasons. One, the one why we had chosen to climb it, was that it would be easier to see if someone attacked us. The other we found out on the following day.
We were just collecting our things when I noticed something massive moving from the corner of my eye. My eyes widened when I realised that the game makers had caused a landslip on one of the mountains marking the edge of the arena. It took everything with it and extended through a huge part of the surface only to stop not that far away from us. I heard the canon sound and looked up to see Tracey's face in the sky.
"So, Caro and Darren made it?", I asked Liam.
"Oh yes." A voice suddenly came up from behind us and I turned around to see the last two tributes standing in front of us. Darren was holding a sword just like Liam and Caro had an axe.
It was time. Time for the last fight. We slowly approached each other and then we attacked at the same time. It seemed predetermined that I would have to face Caro. I heard metal hitting each other beside me where Darren and Liam were fighting but forced myself to focus on Caro instead.
We were equal. Her axe barely missed my head and I hit her stomach with my knee. I used her moment of distraction to throw my knife but that missed her too. I narrowed my eyes. I had two left. I shouldn't lose them. I rolled down on the ground and stabbed her leg so that she fell down, but she still managed to throw her axe in my direction which then ended up in the tree behind me.
"I will kill you. I haven't come this far only for you to step into my way", she spat. Then she pulled my knife out of her leg, and I pulled my last one out of my belt. We clashed again and went down together. What followed was a chaos full of stabs and wounds which we gave each other. In the middle of it I heard a canon. I glanced to the side. Darren and Liam were lying next to each other, half dead, and breathed their last. Their wounds were too severe for any of them to survive them. The second sound of the canon followed. I swallowed and looked back to Caro who had stood up just like me. Her eyes flashed.
"And then there were two", she whispered with satisfaction.
In this moment I couldn't act any other way. My rage came from pain, anger and grief and was as deadly as the knife I was holding. I pulled her to the ground. She hadn't killed Liam, but he had been my friend, my ally. I wouldn't allow her to joke about his death. We were rolling on the ground and suddenly Caro was on top. She smiled and held her knife against my throat.
"Thank you for playing with me, sweetie, but now it's time to go. Any last words?" My throat tightened up. Would my life really end this way? In this arena, as a tribute who would be forgotten and just one name in a long list of fallen tributes? For a moment I was tempted to let go. I was tired, and I wanted to rest. I was prepared to die and to leave everyone behind. To leave Finnick behind.
Finnick. Suddenly I was more alert again. I made a promise, and I will keep it. "You tell me", I said, then pushed Caro away from me and I stood up . I took my knife and felt the familiar movement, felt, how my grip on the weapon tightened. I flung the knife in front of me with all my strength and it dug into Caro's heart before I realised what had just happened. The canon sounded occurred for the very last time.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the victor of the 72nd annual Hunger Games: Amelia Odair!" Then I slumped down and everything went dark.
