Chapter 5

Nara's POV

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I woke up with a headache. I sat up and unzipped the tent. It was early morning. The pink haze was in the sky. I threw on my backpack with everything I needed and exited the tent. I covered my head with my hat and hoodie. I skated down the street with no particular destination in mind. My thoughts were extra crazy today.

I just couldn't believe that they left me here. Masie and Mason were the only "family" I had in my life and they left me like nothing. Like I was nothing,

I was just angry and hurt. I tried to focus on myself, but still tears blurred my vision. I was a sixteen-year-old homeless girl with no real schooling. That isn't exactly the epitome of a model citizen. The truth was that I had no future. What was I going to do with my life?

I skated by the store with the big TV that could be seen from the window. I stopped abruptly when I saw familiar faces on the screen. Rhett & Link.

I entered the store. The girl behind the counter gave me a dirty look and continued to text on her phone.

"We realize that Los Angeles is a big city, but we want to personally thank the girl that saved one of our kids. If you have any info on who she is or where we can contact her, please call this number. And mystery hero, if you're watching, please contact us. Thank you." Rhett and Link took turns speaking.

I couldn't believe my ears or my eyes. Why are they still talking about this news story? I ran out of the store and skated away. I wasn't going to contact them. I wanted nothing to do with those heartless people. And then the kids popped into my mind. I had to tell them I was okay. I immediately skated to the park and waited for them to get there.

They arrived right on time. I watched from a distance as Jessie and Christy hugged them and let them run around. Once they were at our spot, I approached them.

"Nara!" Lincoln, Lily, and Locke ran to hug me.

"Ow, careful there." I laughed in pain.

"I'm so glad you're okay!" Locke hugged my again.

"So am I." I laughed.

"Your lip is cut." Lily frowned.

"You should see my other battle wounds." I joked.

They gave me a concerned look.

"Guys, it's fine." I smiled reassuringly.

They all smiled back except for Lincoln.

"Lincoln..." I said softly.

He jumped onto me and wrapped his arms around my neck as he cried. I hugged him tight back even though it hurt.

"You saved my life." he softly cried.

"I was just looking out for you, kid." I smiled at him.

I wiped his tears.

"You're okay and that's all that matters." I smiled sitting down.

He smiled back at me.

"Listen, guys. I don't want any of you to worry about me. I'll be fine. But I probably won't be able to see you all for a while." I rubbed my arm.

"Why?" Locke looked confused.

"Well, the whole thing with Lincoln was on the news and they are calling me a hero. I don't want them to know who I am and I certainly can't have your dads knowing who I am." I looked away.
