He tosses and turns trying to get out but there's no use. No matter how hard his hands grip at the handle it just won't open. His heart pounds and he feels his ears ringing.
“LET ME IN!”
The scratched sound of his desperate yell echoes around the metal room. There's no motive in what he's doing. When he thinks about what's happening to him he can't remember a thing.
Quickly he notices a window built into the door. Without a second thought, he pounds his fist against it with all his might.
BANG BANG BANG
A sharp pain in his wrist causes him to suddenly stop his attempts to break through. Hopelessly he slides down against the wall and curls into a heap on the floor. The silence is deafening.
…
There's a faint noise. Breathing. On the opposite side of the door. It's so quiet he shouldn't be able to hear it. Especially with a wall in the way.
Yet he does.
And he recognizes it.
“Grace?”
His voice is shaky and almost pathetic.
“Grace, what did they do to you?”
….
“You are a failure to your family. You couldn't even save the kids. Aaron and Emily. Me. We're all dead because of you.”
The voice that responds is sick and cruel. The man feels his stomach twist and he whispers.
“You aren't real…you can't be. She wouldn't say such things…”
“Oh really…?”
The metal door creaks open. The man looks away, refusing to submit to his mental torment.
“Don't be afraid K. We're here for you.”
Whatever it is that's talking to him is close now. The hairs on his neck raise as he feels the cold air of her breathing on his neck. He clutches his head staring hard at the bleak floor.
“You…aren't….real…”
The man freezes as he feels the all too familiar feeling of hands on his shoulders. Hands he grew to love. Hands that he'd hold for hours. Hands that would care for him like no other.
It couldn't be farther than that now.
It's all so horrible, isn't it? What the mind can conjure?
His neck is suddenly forced back by an invisible force. Unable to resist the force the man stares horrified at his deceased wife.
Eyes are known as windows into the soul. Yet her eyes show nothing. No life is present. She's gone.
Ever so slowly her figure leans towards him.
Her lips part.
She whispers into his ear.
“No matter how hard you try you are nothing but a man. A man who's done nothing but let others around him die. You are a small insignificant being. You won't find the cure K.”
…
“We aren't coming back.”
And just like that. The man awoke.
