Charlotte Kiramman was her parents' pride and joy, the perfect daughter for the Kiramman house to show off to the world and the complete opposite of her older sister, Caitlyn.
Caitlyn was an enforcer, going against all of her mothers wishes, whereas Charlotte was her mothers doll. What her mother told her to wear, she wore, what she told her to say, she said, and where she told her to go, she went.
So, when her sister sneaks away from their mothers watchful eye, Charlotte is sent to find her - a task that she had been sent to do many times throughout her life.
Despite their differences, both sisters were as close as sisters could be and loved each other dearly. When they were younger, it was rare to see one without the other - something their mother had always raised an eyebrow at but their father had put his foot down at the suggestion of putting some space between the two of them.
It was because of how well Charlotte knew her sister that she knew who she would be with the moment she had noticed her missing. The question was never “who”, it was “where”.
Politely holding her hands in front of her skirts, she walked up to a group of enforcers who were gathered just outside the door of the hall where Jayce had given his speech only minutes ago.
They straightened at her approach, joking smiles slipping from their faces as they stood to attention. Something sank inside her. She sometimes forgot how much of a prominent family she belonged to. It would have been nice to be included in the jokes that happened around her but, of course, no one would risk offending a councillors daughter.
Pushing those thoughts away, Charlotte allowed a small, delicate smile to drift across her mouth in a way that seemed natural but was actually very, very practiced.
Her mother had not relented until she had learnt to smile in such a way, naturally.
“Hello,” She greeted, allowing her smile to grow ever so slightly more when they greeted her in return, “Would you happen to know my sister, Caitlyn Kiramman?”
Stupid question. Everyone in the city knew any member of the Kiramman family but the enforcers would know her sister on a personal level. She had been told of the way they mocked her for being born into a high status family. Caitlyn took it in her stride, as was her nature, but Charlotte knew she wanted to fit in more with her coworkers. Even if she never said it.
The group of enforcers nodded, still not relaxing from their stiff postures.
Unintentionally pursing her lips in annoyance, Charlotte quickly adjusted herself, looking down to brush off imaginary dust from her skirts and smooth out wrinkles from the arms of her gloves before looking back up, the small expression of annoyance once again replaced by a gentle smile, “Wonderful, and would any of you know of her whereabouts?”
The answer was given quickly, the tallest of the group, potentially the leader, stepping forward and giving a location with a respectful nod of her head.
One more practiced smile was sent their way, as well as a thanks for their time, before Charlotte started in the direction she was given, pretending like she couldn't hear the group mocking her accent once they thought she was far enough away.
Some people thought being a Kiramman was an honour - and it was. She knew the privileges that came with being born into her family and she would never take that for granted, not when she knew of the people around that struggled to even put food on the table some days.
But no one ever knew how lonely it was.
Sometimes Charlotte got overwhelmed by it all and fantasized about running away, starting a life in another city where no one knew her or her family. Where people wanted to be friends, or even more, with her for her. Not for what connections she could give them.
