The bell rang above me as I walked into 'Dolly's Diner'.
The middle aged woman behind the counter looked up and a smile covered her face as she saw me come in.
"Hey Savannah" she greeted.
"Hi Dolly" I replied with a smile on my own face. If you haven't realised. She's the owner.
"Your five minutes early" she said as she looked at her watch.
"I left school a little earlier today." I said trying to keep up the good attitude.
"Oh okay, you can head around and get ready for your shift and then have a little something to drink before you start." She suggested generously.
"Thanks Dolly." I smiled an actual smile.
I headed behind the counter and to the room at the back.
I dropped my bag on a bench and opened my locker, getting my uniform out.
I slipped off my flannel and t-shirt and replaced it with a white blouse with puffy sleeves.
I then hopped out of my jeans and put on the pink shirt that came up to just below mid thigh-- I hated it-- and tucked my white blouse into the skirt. I unfolded the White, housewife looking apron and tied it around my waist.
I wrinkled my nose disapprovingly as I looked at myself in the mirror. There was too much skin on show compared to before and because of that my bruises were slightly noticeable. I took my hair out of my braid and instead of being its natural straight self, it had a slight wave to it.
I wanted to leave it out so my arms could be covered even the tiniest bit but it was protocol that I had to tie my hair up.
I quickly pulled my hair back into a high ponytail not caring whether it was neat or not and then shut my locker and stuffed my clothes in my bag.
I checked to see if I had put everything away before I walked out of the room and towards the shelf were all our name badges were kept.
I took the little pink thing with white writing on it and pinned it on my shirt.
"Make yourself whatever, but I need you to hurry because it's starting to get crowded." Dolly called over her shoulder as she made someone's coffee.
I looked around seeing most of the tables fill up and decided to have my drink at the end of my shift.
" don't worry Dolly, I'll just have it at the end of my shift"
"Okay Hun." She called back as she hurried along.
"Hey Sav when did you get here?" A familiar voice called from behind me and I turned around to see my 19 year old co- worker stand behind me with a friendly smile.
"Heather! About 5 minutes ago." I smiled and gave her a hug.
Even though heather was two years older than me and finished school, she was the closest thing I had.
"Alright we need to catch up later tonight" she smiled a pearly white smile before waving and heading to a table to serve some people.
I headed to the cash register making sure everything was in check.
An old man walked up to me with a toothless smile.
"Hi Mr Grayson, how was your coffee?" I asked making friendly conversation with our Diner's most regular customer.
"It was great, thankyou dear." He smiled handing me a five dollar bill.
"Thanks sir, see you again." I smiled as I accepted the money.
He walked away calling a goodbye to Dolly while I was looking down at the register, stuffing the bill into the ancient thing.
I heard someone cough as they waited in line.
"Hi how can I help you?" I said cheerily as I said, still looking down.
"Ugh hi, could you please get my aunt?" He said.
I looked up in surprise to face Justin.
"Excuse me?" I asked unsurely.
He finally looked up from whatever he was doing. His eyes widened in shock as he realised who I was.
"Savannah? You work here?" He finally spoke
"About three years now. What was this about your aunt?" I said slowly.
"Ugh, my aunt, Dolly?" He replied just as slowly.
Now it was my turn for my eyes to widen in shock.
"Your Dolly's nephew? The one she won't stop talking about?" I gasped.
"I guess." He muttered.
A few awkward seconds later, I decided it would be better if I actually called Dolly.
"Dolly!" I called and her head snapped my way and her face lit up as she saw her nephew.
"Justin!" She squealed giving him a sloppy kiss on the cheek and I had to bite my gums to stop me from smiling.
"Hey aunt Dolly." He said less enthusiastically, his cheeks turning a light shade of pink.
"What bring you here sugarplum?" She cooed, the nickname obviously embarrassing him even more.
"Ugh, mom wanted me to pick up a few caramel donuts and dad wants a mocha." He said quickly.
"Alright Sweety, Savannah do you mind getting four chocolate donuts and putting them in a bag?" She asked.
"Sure" I said still recovering from the past few minutes.
I walked over to where all the sugary goods were and put some chocolate donuts in a paper bag and then in a plastic one. I brought it back to the counter and held it over waiting for him to take it. His hand brushed my hand ever so lightly, I might have even missed it. Unfortunately though, I didn't and I couldn't help but feel something weird in my fingers and my stomach.
"I'll go make the mocha" I muttered.
I came back after a silent two minutes and handed him the takeaway cup.
He pulled out his wallet but his Dolly stopped him.
"Don't be crazy baby, it's on the house." She said slapping his hand away
Hey lady I need that money!
I thought to myself. I was snapped out of my thoughts when I saw him placing the exact amount of money in the tip jar.
"Thanks, have a good day." I said managing a smile as he flashed a small one back and headed out.
I heaved a deep sigh.
I was brought back to reality when the bell on the doors rang again and in walked the famous five, also known as Alyssa and her bitches.
They headed towards a booth and sadly, I knew that I had to serve them.
I huffed as I picked up the device to write down their orders and walked towards them.
"Ew look at her legs." Was the first thing one of them said when I arrived. I rolled my eyes and put a fake smile on.
"Hi, welcome to Dolly's Diner, can I get you anything?" I chirped.
"A new waitress" Alyssa said with disgust.
"Anything related to what's on the menu?" I asked through gritted teeth.
She narrowed her eyes at me before turning her attention to the menu.
"I'll get the chicken salad, less chicken, more salad." She said after a few moments. "Oh and try not to poison it." She added.
I pursed my lips as I looked at the other bimbos.
They all agreed to get the same thing and I finally walked back to the counter and sent the order to Danny, our 22 year old chef that was behind the wall.
A few minutes later Danny's voice called,
"Order up!"
"Thanks Danny" I said as I balanced four plates on my arms.
"No problem kiddo" he replied with a wink and I just laughed.
I carefully made my way back to their table and laid out the food for Alyssa's four wanna-be's and turned to face Alyssa.
"I'll be back with your food in a second." I said.
"Oh god, the service here is despicable." She complained.
"Do you even know what that big word means?" I asked biting my tongue to keep it from sounding sarcastic.
She raised a nasty eyebrow at me after a few seconds of probably realising that she didn't.
"Why are you talking to me without my permission?" She snapped and I rolled my eyes as I walked off.
"Here you go Sav." Danny said as he handed me the last chicken salad.
"Thanks Dan" I said with a sour smile as I looked at the salad.
Before I left the counter, I quickly spit in her food to add some extra flavour to the dressing before walking out with a satisfied smirk.
"There you go" I said with a sarcastic smile and walked off leaving her behind with an unsure look on her face."Karma's a Bitch". I muttered as I walked back towards the counter.
