Reminiscing

My eyes quickly scanned the different shelves for the stuff my mom had asked me for.
"Sushi Rice" I said to myself as I searched.
"There you are" I said grabbing the package.
"Talking to food are we?" An amused voice asked from behind me. My eyes widened in embarrassment as I turned around slowly.
"Yeah.. I do it all the time. It's actually one of my many talents" I said with a surprisingly steady voice.
"Right" he said unsurely making me mentally curse for saying something so stupid.
"Sushi Rice?" He asked raising his perfect eyebrows. I had to bite my lip to stop myself from sighing in relief at the fact that he had changed the subject.
"Ugh, yeah. My mom is going through this phase where she's trying to cook all these different foods and stuff." I explained.
"Cool, so why exactly do you have three frozen pizza's then?" He said as his eyes glanced between the food and my face.
"You're very observant" I said, mostly to myself.
I brushed the strand of hair that kept falling on my face behind my ear.
"Well you see" I started rather hesitantly, " My mom... Well let's just say that cooking isn't one of her finer areas." I tried putting it lightly.
He chuckled in response making me look down at his chest. Weird, I know but it was shaking when he laughed and even though there's no skin showing, it's still pretty fine. That's when I noticed that he was wearing the employee shirt.
"You work here?" My eyebrows shooting up.
"Why are you so surprised?" Now it was his turn to raise his eyebrows.
"Well, you gave off a 'I just pick money off of trees' kinda vibe." I said, trying to sound as if I hadn't been paying that much attention to him.
"Right." Was all he said.
"Well I should get going." You shouldn't be seen standing with me.
"Okay, enjoy the sushi. Or Pizza. See you tomorrow." He said with a half smile as he went back to stacking things on shelves.
I didn't answer, merely just giving him a little wave before going to pay for the things.

"Hey Mom!" I called as I came in and shut the door behind me.
"Oh honey, good." She said as she poked her head out of the kitchen.
I threw my keys and the groceries on the table.
"What's good?" I asked as I made my way over to the kitchen to join her.
"Well, we have guests coming for dinner in about an hour and well, I need your help."
"Who is coming?" I questioned as I started unpacking some of the food.
"My new clients. Actually, there old friends of mine. Shelley and Mark. Shelley and I used to go to school together." She said, smiling a little at the memories. My mom works as a financial advisor in case you were wondering.
"Oh alright." I said. "So what do you need me to do then?" I said after I finished putting the food in its place.
"Maybe just clean around the house a little while I make this sushi." She handed me a broom.
"Mom? Are you sure you want to make the sushi. I brought pizza if it's easier." I said not so sure about the idea of our guests getting food poisoning or something.
"No it's fine." She said dismissing me and I said a prayer before leaving to clean.

"Okay mom, I finished dusting the furniture, anything else you want?" I stuck my head in the kitchen to see my mom frustrated trying to put the sticky rice in the seaweed, her eyebrows furrowed in what look liked concentration and annoyance.
"Oh." She said looking up. "No that's it I think. You can go get ready they should be here in a few minutes." She said looking at her watch.
"Okay, you might want to tidy the kitchen up a little." I said with an amused smile as I turned around and headed up to my room.
"This dinner sounds a tad bit important so maybe I should dress to impress a little." I said to myself as I looked through the shelves of clothing.
My eyes settled on something white.
White is one of the few things that make my slightly tanned skin and dark brown hair look good. Atleast I think so. I don't really get compliments that much and I don't usually wear white because it's like a fresh sheet of paper ready to be scribbled on.
I pulled out the white clothe. There won't be any kids here anyway right? I have nothing to worry about.
I unfolded it and looked at the dress properly. I shrugged and slipped my clothes off and put the dress on.
It was tight on my 'curves' or whatever shape I had and then it flowed down from the waistline stopping at a couple of inches above my knees. The dress was sleeveless and plain white apart from a braid like design on the upper area.
I towards my mirror and took my hair out of the braid it was in. The braid had made my normally straight hair slightly wavy so I decided to just leave the hair out and let it flow down so it hung around my waist. I spotted a white flower hair clip on my table and reached for it and quickly stuck it in my hair. I already had a little bit of make up on so I decided to just leave my face.
I looked in the mirror and sighed. I wish I had more occasions rather than just for a dinner with my moms clients to dress up like this.
I slipped my feet into some white sandals and headed downstairs.
"Honey you look beautiful." My mom said, kissing my cheek. Just as she pulled back, the doorbell rang.
"Oh, I'll go get the door, do you mind putting this on the table." My mom said pointing at what obviously looked like Chinese takeout in some dishes.
"What happened to the sushi?" I asked with a small grin.
"Oh whatever." She said as she walked to the door.
I started setting out the table and the food when I heard their voices.
"Shelley! Oh it's good to see you again." My mom said.
"Mark! You haven't changed a bit." I wonder when the last time was that she saw them I thought as I put the last of the things out.
"Jenny!" I heard what was probably Shelley squeal.
"Hi Jenifer." What sounded like Mark.
"Oh you brought your son. You've grown up so much!" My mom gushed at an unknown third person.
"Ugh, thankyou Ms Jenifer." A males voice said unsurely.
"Oh please, called me Jenifer." My mom needs to stop talking so much.
"I have a daughter your age. You two used to be quite good friends for some time." My mom said.
Now this confused me a little. Maybe I've met them before.
I took this as my que to walk out.
My eyes first saw Shelley and Mark. I could slightly see someone standing a bit away but I couldn't see them properly.
"Hi Sir, Mam." I said politely as I shook their hands.
"Oh nonsense, it's Shelley and Mark." Shelley said with a smile that I returned.
"You've grown into quite the beautiful young lady." She continued and I blushed as such a foreign thing I hear.
"Here is your long lost bestfriend." She laughed as she stepped aside. I laughed.
"Hi-- Justin?!"
"Savannah?" He said his eyes moving up and down my body making me shift uncomfortable.
"Wow- I mean." He cleared his throat.
"Justin?!" I questioned again.
"Yeah?" He finally asked amusedly.
"I take it you two know each other." My mom said with a smile that suggested something.
"Yeah. Ugh, we go the ugh, same school." I stuttered.
"Oh Justin, you didn't tell me Savannah was in the school you moved to."
"Well mother, I didn't know you knew her." He said with a small eye roll.
"Wait, what was this about us knowing each other?" I looked back and forth between Justin and our mothers.
"Oh, you and Justin couldn't be separated! You two were like thing 1 and thing 2. You were always together. That is until we moved away when Justin was six. I still remember, it took him ages to get over it. He was always crying and moping around, asking for 'Ana'. Shelley laughed and Justin's eyes widened and I could see the slightest shade of pink tinge his cheeks. The sight almost made me smile but I held it.
"Oh that's nothing. Anytime you weren't together,Savannah would always talk about him. Justin likes this and Justin does this. When you moved away Savannah didn't move for at least two weeks. She was always in the same place. Oh, and it was like trying to feed a wall." My mom started and it was my turn for my eyes to widen.
"Oh and remember that time when Justin proposed to her? That was the cutest. Now what did he say?" Shelley said, a finger on her chin.
"Oh yes, I remember. He asked her to marry him and she said no because she was scared or something that he would like someone else. Then he said that he will never love anyone else because- oh what was it? Oh yes- it would be like he replaced his princess with a toad." My mom said and I blushed even though we were five.
"Oh and you two were each other's first kis-"
"Wait hold up." I stopped them. My eyes couldn't get any wider.
"I think it's time to move on." Justin said with red cheeks as he gently pushed his mom.
Mark just laughed at all of this and led the way to the kitchen.
"Nothing's changed." He smiled. This was too much for one day.
