"i saw katherine today." the scared and shaken caroline forbes told stefan who'd just walked through the door of the salvatore boarding house after he'd gotten an urgent call from his brother.

stefan became immediately on guard at the statement, "where?" he questioned and folded his arms over his chest as caroline explained the situation.

"at the grill." she stated to her close friend before she paused and sheepishly continued, "i just stopped by to gawk and...quasi-stalk matt. after totally embarrassing myself, i had to pretend to use the bathroom even though i didn't really have to go because i'm a doofus." she said rolling her eyes at the awkward situation.

damon too rolled his eyes at the non-relevant information, "skip the teen drama, get to it." he told caroline in a dull tone.

"i ran into katherine pretending to be elena in the bathroom. she wanted me to deliver a message." she recited as looked at stefan who raised his eyebrow in interest. "what was the message?" he questioned looking cautious of what caroline was about to say and shared a look with his older brother.

"'tell damon and stefan that i want the moonstone or i will rip this town apart until it rains blood.'" caroline quoted katherine's message before she paused.

damon smirked towards his younger brother before sharing a look with caroline, "tell him the rest of it." he said looking almost amused by the situation.

"tonight, she wants to do it at the masquerade ball." caroline sighed, a little startled from the suddenness of the request and the threat that came along with it.

stefan exhaled deeply as he leaned on the couch beside him, "she wants to do it in public, killing mason threw her off guard." he said in an annoyed voice as he looked at damon and began a small pace.

"she's running scared. what she did to jenna was desperate. she's out of tricks." damon, who was also annoyed by the ignorant doppelgänger, told his brother trying not to let stefan worry too much.

stefan shook his head, "we can't underestimate her. we have to play this smarter than her." he said as he pointed to his head to emphasise his assertion.

"can't we just give katherine the moonstone?" caroline asked completely over having katherine run around ruining her life and trying to control her. she just wanted this to be over, she wanted katherine gone.

the salvatore brothers shook their heads in unison, amusing caroline who watched.

a smug smile formed on the older salvatore's expression as he thought of a different option.

a better option.

"i've got a better idea." he told the pair of friends who glanced toward him, "what's that?" caroline perked up hoping whatever this idea was would solve the impending disaster.

stefan watched curiously as his brother made knowing eye contact with him, the arrogant smile on damon's face simply grew bigger, "i think it's time to call my favourite person." he said to stefan whose eyes widened at the statement.

stefan wouldn't acknowledge it then, but he felt his dead heart skip a beat at the thought of the girl he once loved.

he would be lying if he said he wasn't at least a bit excited at the concept of possibly seeing her again. to talk to her face to face.

"who?" caroline's voice broke stefan from his thoughts as he made eye contact with his brother who had a knowing look on his face.

damon noticed all too well how much his younger brother cared for the girl from their past. she carried a special place in both the salvatore's hearts for extremely different reasons.

damon piped up, knowing stefan wasn't entirely paying attention at that moment, his brother too preoccupied with memories. "someone who knows katherine better than anyone." he vaguely explained to caroline who lifts her eyebrows in curiosity but is still extremely confused.

who were they?

stefan grabbed his phone from his back jean pocket
and clicked one of his top numbers on speed dial, listening as it rang as he waited for her to pick up -which only took two rings.

"hello stefan." the caller greeted as they answered the phone call. a subconscious smile appeared on both of the brother's faces at the sound of their voice. memories of the past ran through both their heads.

"avyanna." stefan breathed out in contentment as his eyes softly closed. it was as if all his dilemmas drifted away at the mere sound of her voice.

just hearing her voice was like a drug, it lured him in and calmed every bit of him.

caroline watched even more perplexed as she noticed stefan's face turn into a delicate look that she hadn't seen before, not even with elena, which made caroline even more curious about who this 'avyanna' person was.

she glanced toward damon and saw him watching his brother carefully, his eyes were gentle and attentive but also holding what looked to be sympathy?

"we need your help." stefan confessed to avyanna who carefully listened through the phone, picking up on background noises and making sure he wasn't in any apparent danger at that very second.

"i know," she stated as she sat in a somewhat congested location from what stefan concluded, there was a multitude of people conversing in the background.

"i will be there soon." she informed stefan with a firm tone before she whispered an endearing goodbye and hung up the phone, leaving a yearning stefan.

damon saw the look on his brother's face and placed a comforting hand on stefan's shoulder.

as much as the brothers fought and bickered with each other, they both understood the mutual fondness they had for avyanna.

she was the one person they could both never fight over, they had too much respect for her.

"who's avyanna?" caroline spoke up, breaking the brotherly moment which made damon slightly irritated as his brother's face contorted back into his ordinary uptight expression, which had existed there since 1864.

"katherine's sister." damon stated to caroline whose face turned into a look of horror and confusion.

why would katherine's so-called sister help
them kill katherine?
