The water planet of 4546B was a strange and wondrous place, its oceans teeming with life unlike anything else in the universe. Y/n, a human woman with a deep appreciation for the sea, had been stranded on the planet for a couple months. She spent her days swimming among the giant kelp forests and exploring the countless underwater caves that dotted the ocean floor. On this particular day, she found herself in the Bloodkelp Forest, a place known for its large Bloodvines and the strange, glowing creatures that called it home.
Unbeknownst to Y/n, a shadow loomed in the depths, and before she could react, a massive claw latched onto her leg. The pain was unbearable as she thrashed wildly, her oxygen tank flying free from its mooring. Her world went into slow motion as she watched in horror as the last remaining lifeline to the surface floated away, the air inside her lungs becoming precious beyond measure. She closed her eyes, prepared to meet whatever fate awaited her, and whispered a silent prayer to whatever god might be listening.
But fate had other plans.
With a powerful snap, the claw released her, and she felt another presence in the water. Something strong and fast, cutting through the water with ease. She opened her eyes to see a woman, her form encased in a shimmering prawn suit, wielding a massive dagger made from the mandible of a Reaper Leviathan. She swung the dagger with deadly precision, cleaving the crabsquid in two, before grabbing Y/n and descending into the darkest depths.
When Y/n regains consciousness, she finds herself laying on a bed covered with furs and linens. She looks around in a daze before her eyes land on an older woman who's probably in her mid to late forties. The woman's skin is a bit weathered from years spent underwater, but her eyes still hold a spark of youthful mischief. Her short black and grey hair sits just above her shoulders, and she wears a diving suit that looks well used. "Well, well, well," the woman drawls, "look who the crabsquid decided to bring home for dinner."
Y/n blushes from embarrassment as she looks away from the older woman, whose accent causes butterflies to swarm her insides. "Th-thank you for saving me," she stammers. "I'm Y/n." Marguerit Maida regards Y/n with a critical eye for a moment before nodding once. "I'm Marguerit. And you're welcome. Now, you should know that this base ain't a safe place for someone like you." Y/n's blush seems to darken as she anxiously adjusts herself on the bed. "It's safer than what lurks outside of it, I'm sure..."
Marguerit snorts dismissively. "Oh, I'm sure it is," she says, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "This place is just a hole in the side of the ocean, filled with junk that the corporations don't want to deal with. They'd just as soon forget it exists, and I'd be more than happy to let them." She paces across the room, her movements fluid and confident. "But you, Y/n, you're a complication. You're a reminder of the outside world, and I can't afford those kinds of distractions." "So you're just gonna kick me out because I remind you that other people still exist?" Y/n's eyebrows furrow in confusion and frustration as she stares up at Marguerit, silently hoping the older woman doesn't catch on to her nervousness. "I understand I'm intruding on your "home", but isn't there some sort of unspoken code or whatever that would allow you to show some form of kindness?"
