Before the universe took its first breath, I remained, stuck in an endless void, bonded by the weight of nothingness. Until one day, I had a friend.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

A hand carelessly dragged itself across the nightstand, smacking the alarm clock over and over until it stopped. A large thud could be heard as an individual fell out of bed. She sighed in pain as her back ached. The middle-aged woman fixed her long, curly black hair in the bathroom. A few muscles shone through her tank top. After taking a long, steamy shower, she walked into her living room to find her son sitting on the couch, watching YouTube on their smart TV.

"Hello, everybody. My name is Jojo, and I'll be playing..."

Julia: Jacob, what do you want for breakfast?

The boy turned to face her with excitement.

Jacob: Can we have pancakes again?!

Julia: Pancakes? chuckles We just had pancakes yesterday, fool.

Jacob: I know, but you make them so well, sis.

Julia put a smile on her face.

Julia: Fine, only because you said your big sister is a good cook.

After getting a bowl and combining the ingredients, the hot skillet sizzled as the batter was added to the oil. It had the puffy, sugary smell of delicious home-cooked buttermilk pancakes. The two sat at the table and enjoyed their meal. Julia scrolled through her phone.

Jacob: Mr. Travis was here.

Julia, still occupied with her phone: Was he now? What did he say?

Jacob: He was asking about... the rent.

Julia spoke with an annoyed tone: I told that fatass not to bother you like that. He's supposed to come to me. I already had this talk with him.

Jacob: Sis... your language.

Julia: Oh, sorry. I got a bit upset.

A weird moment of quiet passed.

Julia: HEY! Guess whose birthday is coming up soon.

Jacob's cheeks turned red a bit.

Jacob: Me.

Julia wrapped her hands around him and gave him a small kiss on his forehead.

Julia: That's right, and you know what that means.

Jacob: Birthday presents!

Julia: Look who's on a winning streak today. You're on fire. Now, for all the marbles, what's behind lucky door number one.

Jacob pondered to himself.

Julia: Come on, Jacob. I know you got this.

Jacob: Hmm, I'm thinking... Is it-
