Stevie carter walked out of the airport, heat meeting her at the exit. It was probably the hottest day this place had seen.

"So, how are you feeling about this adjustment"

She looked, unimpressed "the same way I felt when you asked on the plan"

Janine, her social worker. She had been assigned to her case since the first time her mother caused trouble.

"Stevie-...This is quite the adjustment. It's a big move to place with new people and my job is to make sure you are okay and safe"

"you remember I lived here once, right? Like literally a year ago"

"Yes, and you've had a lot happen since you left. It's my job to make sure you are okay"

Stevie rollled her eyes, she took out two pain killers, before she could take them they were snapped from her hands.

"Where the hell did you get these?" Janine asked, investigating them.

She scoffed, "relax. They are Advil the sun is giving me a migraine; I'm not not popping pills just yet"

Janine rolled her eyes, "Stevie, that isn't funny. I know what you were doing for those first 4 months"

"What?" Stevie raised a brow "weed, that's the problem now?"

"Addiction can be hereditary, you have to be -.."

"Be mindful and aware, I know." She recited, in a monotone voice "But if it took the edge of I was happy, don't worry. I'm fine. I'm practically living with the Walton's now"

"Stevie, I just want you to be happy. This is a good change, you have friends here."

"Friends I haven't seen in over a year, people move on. I'm just the girl who got into a car crash"

A car pulled into park, a woman who was glowing with happiness stepped out, waving excitedly.

"There she is"

Stevie pulled down her sunglasses, "yeah. She's hard to miss"

"Oh Stevie, sweetie look at you. Gosh you are so grown up how was the flight, how are you feeling"

She shrugged, "flight was good. Right now I just want to get into the car and roll down the windows"

Stevie took the keys from her aunt, she strolled over to the car.

"How's she doing?" Joanne asked.

"Don't let that act fool you, she's just worried about the adjustment and acting cool and nonchalant is an odd coping mechanism"

"Well, thank you so much for all you have done."

"I'll keep in touch, and you can call me if you need anything"

Stevie looked up from the magazine, she resisted an eye roll and her aunt came towards the car; smiling like her jaw broke in that position.

"Alright, everything is set up for you at the house so all you have to do in unpack whatever you have now"

"Cool"

_______

Stevie walked into her room, it was nice. Bigger than her old one, cleaner too.

The walls were painted a dark forest green, which was a colour she happened to love. There were some shelves on the walls.

In the middle of room was a double bed, with dark sheets and a few throw pillows. Across from it was a desk with a computer, Dani's own computer.
