Nobody POV

A few hours later and after a tense conversation with Nephis and Cassie where Sunny had to explain Wyatt's actions, pushing most of the blame onto him, a boat is starting to form. The main shape of the boat was cut out of the large shell of the Carapace Demon making it relatively compact while making a mast for a sail, which is expected to be Cassie's cloak. The sail would be powered by Wyatt's newest Memory that allows him to form wind from his staff, with Sunny having a tough time explaining why Wyatt had one of Cassie's Memories. At this point the goal is just to stay alive through the day and push back against any creatures that try to attack them.
This proves to be easier said than done as the first creatures enter the Ashen Barrows no more than thirty minutes after the sea receded.
A couple of carapace scavengers walk up to what's left of the tree and look around. Noticing the cohort, they immediately start rushing forward, forcing the crew to be on the defensive. After getting closer they start to slow down, seemingly unsure of themselves.
Nephis doesn't waste this opportunity and when the scavengers get close, she cuts through a thin opening on the front to take them both out. This move was only possible due to the fact that the scavengers weren't moving nearly as fast as they should've been. Slowed by their own indecisiveness on whether or not to attack, they became easy targets for someone as well trained as Nephis.
Despite having survived their first encounter without so much as a scratch, Sunny, Cassie and Nephis all share a grim look, knowing that this attack was only the beginning of a small war that would have to be fought against anything encroaching on the former tree's territory.
Sunny then becomes distracted in what Nephis easily recognizes as a conversation between him and Wyatt. A but unhappy that she can't hear what she knows to be important plans for their survival she simply waits to see what action Sunny will take next.
Sunny then pulls out the scavenger echo that he hadn't used in weeks, but instead of ordering it to do anything he just lets it stand in front of him as he places his hand on the echo with resolve clear on his face.
The next second, the echo starts to darken, it's chitin switching from colorful to a shade of black. This not only shocks Nephis but also Sunny who couldn't have expected such a result.
Sunny eyes then widen almost unnoticeably.
After a few seconds of deliberation he comes to a decision and places his two shadows on the former echo, making it much more powerful, so much so that not even Nephis is sure she could win in a one on one battle with the beast. But the surprises don't end there as it then becomes even stronger, this time not by shadows but by a force invisible to any onlookers. Despite this, Nephis notices that the creature is now somewhere between the strength of a Centurion and the Demon.
Such an upgrade couldn't have come at a better time as a Centurion arrives the next minute holding a precious Transcendent Soul Shard high above its head, clearly having no knowledge of any events that transpired at the tree over the last month.
Before the Centurion gets too close Sunny has an ingenious idea of putting the new charm inside the mandibles of the scavenger Shadow, seeing how strong the effect was on regular scavengers and how strong his new Shadow is, he feels this combination may be able to stand on equal ground with the Centurion.
Before Sunny gets a chance to place the Memory anywhere near the Shadow, he yelps in surprise and a few seconds later decides against it, now terrified of the Shadow eating the it.
Instead he tells Nephis to hold the Charm and stand near the scavenger Shadow to achieve nearly the same effect.
With a dangerous look in her eyes, Nephis takes the Memory and stands slightly away from the fight to minimize her own risk.
When the Centurion finally arrives, it slowly inches closer to the cohort. It has no clue whether or not the dark scavenger in front of it is the newest servant of the tree and thus refrains from attacking. Upon standing right in front of the scavenger and by proxy within range of the Charm, it stops, closes its eyes, bows its head, and hands it the Soul Shard.
This completely shocking turn of events leaves their jaws dropped. When Cassie asks Sunny what's going on, he tells her and the blind girl is left gasping, clearly also never expecting this turn of events, even with her future sight.
Half a minute later, Sunny orders his Shadow to take the Soul Shard. Wyatt then tries to convince Sunny to put the Centurion to use somehow, and Sunny asks if he has any kind of plan for that, Wyatt says no, and that he'll think of a way but Sunny is only interested in plans that have been at least somewhat though through. The moment he says he doesn't have one, Sunny wastes no time in ordering the death of the Centurion.
The scavenger quickly puts his black metallic pincer around the neck of the Centurion, and snaps it shut before the Centurion can even open its eyes.
