The ugly witch sat bedridden, the brown-based quilt draped over her withered body. "Did you bring me what I asked for?" she asked, to the bluebird who had just flown through her window, in a hoarse, frail voice.
"I found two boys lost in the woods; but I can't give them to you, but no, they need to go home." the bluebird replied sternly, hoping to find a way for her to be saved without having to make puppets of the two boys she had met and traveled with. She had known they would have to be given up in exchange for her freedom, but she tried her best to find some way where everyone would be safe from the wrinkled, old, hag.
"Nonsense, I'll give them a wonderful home here! And can't you see I'm sick and helpless?" the witch asked, trying to act innocent towards what she did in order to make it easier for Beatrice, the bluebird, to hand the boys over to her doing. "Our arrangement was for you to bring me a child servant, then I would snip, snip, snip your family's wings away!"
"...alright, fine." Beatrice agreed reluctantly knowing she had no choice if she wanted her family to have a safe and happy life, free from their curse of being bluebirds. She wished it didn't have to come to this, that no one would be forced to be the hag's slave but seeing no way of freeing her family from the curse she had inflicted upon them, she agreed. (haha, look at that! the 'she' could apply to either; Beatrice blames herself for her family's curse while the witch is the one who actually cursed them)
Just then Wirt and Gregory, who had been following Beatrice after she suspiciously left them in the cold dead of night opened the door to the witches' hut. Surprised, Beatrice turned her head to them, had she been caught? Did they now know what she was planning to do to them? "Wirt!" she exclaimed, hoping to explain herself in a way that wouldn't make her the 'bad guy' before they assumed what was going on.
Wirt and Gregory stood there in shock, trying to process who this woman was. "Adelaide?" Wirt questioned. Just then Adelaide pulled a string and trapped the two boys in rope. Beatrice, forced to stand there glanced helplessly at Wirt. She knew for her family's good it had to be done.
"Beatrice...", Wirt expressed sadly, "I thought we were...friends?" At this, Beatrice turned her head away from the brothers.
