Chapter 10
(FLASHBACK)
Both Chris and Cole were upstairs in the room that harbored most of the board games we had abandoned within weeks after receiving them from our parents, trying to find another source of entertainment since I had managed to whine my way into gaining control over the television.
They were mad at me. I could tell.
Paranoia of them plotting revenge against me had skipped my thoughts completely as my favorite show, which was admittedly girly, had came up.
"Come on Taylor," My mother stepped out from the archway that separated the living room and kitchen, wiping off her hands with a white rag. "Go take yourself a nice bath before dinner. And wear that pretty dress I set out for you. I want you looking presentable for my birthday dinner."
Although I did grunt and stomp my way towards the stairs, she did have a reason to imply the last part of her plea. My idea of normal dinner attire were either gym shorts and a cami or pajama pants and a oversized shirt of either Chris' or my dad's.
I was only complying to the whole dress thing because it was her special day and besides that, it was a small gig just including my dad, Chris, Cole and his parents, and I. And it also featured a chef and a few of his assistants who were going to prepare a whole fancy lobster meal for us.
Not too much of an audience to witness an awkward fourteen year old girl make a utter fool of herself in front of her long-time crush.
I had caught sight of the Springy dress my mother picked out for me on my way into my bathroom. It was... cute, just not me.
While, I sat in the mist of the soapy water topped off with creamy white foamy bubbles I didn't notice the bathroom door cracking open slowly wider by the second. Instead, I laid there singing along to Vanessa Carlton, who's voice hummed from the radio that I sat on the tank lid of my porcelain toilet.
I only had a chance to see Chris' hand which clasped loosely onto a reddish-orange lobster before he dunked it into the tub, near my bare leg. I barely had a chance for a second thought, when I felt something scrape my thigh.
Fear jolted into action and a throat-throbbing scream bustled from my mouth, making both Chris' and Cole's laughter muffled to my own ears.
I saw both of them tumble out of my bathroom door, pushing, shooving and laughing.
I wanted to kill them both! But the embarrassment was overwhelming and I wound up sprawled out on my bed, crying my eyes out.
I forgot about it being my mother's special day, I forgot about the chef and his assistants, I forgot about all the preparation, and I even forgot all of my friend's words of encouragement towards approaching Cole, because this stunt was an obvious sign that he didn't feel the same way towards me.
Eventually, people started knocking on my door, asking if I was feeling sick or if I was coming down for dinner-- I didn't answer to anything. They could've mistaken me for dead for all I cared.
