I threw my backpack over my shoulder and opened the car door, getting out of the car and into the November frost. Bruce helped me to hold Matthew in one arm and the baby stuff in the duffel bag in another, while I held Amelia. Our teams of Secret Service agents marched off first, surrounding the building once the coast was clear. A pair of frosted glass doors served as the entry point of the building, with the business logo stamped on the glass panel as well. Timothy and Montgomery pushed the doors open for us to enter. The ground floor of the office served as the main entrance and the lobby area, with a receptionist desk facing the twin glass doors and the elevator lobby behind the said desk.
"Morning Doctor Reagan." the receptionist greeted. "Mr Hayes left word that you're starting work today."
"Yes." I say. "That's why I'm here." The receptionist produced a badge for me, with my name and position in the firm printed on it, alongside my photograph.
"The ID card also served as an access card to the office, visitors will have their customized card." The cardholder with a neck strap attached reminded me of my days as an FBI agent, but now I'm not working for the FBI anymore, not even the CIA where I still feel awkward working alongside my ex-boyfriend. We reached the elevator lobby, just as an elevator carriage arrived on the same floor. Dominic stepped out, wearing a neat suit and tie, complete with a pair of brown oxfords.
"Hey Isa." he greeted.
"Morning Dom." I say.
"I'll show you around here." he said, turning on his heels and reentering the elevator. "We're still setting up shop here, but the offices are ready for working in." he said, as the elevator took us to the designated floor of the consulting firm's office. Dominic scanned his ID card on the card reader and the door acting as an entrance to the firm unlocked with a soft beep. The office has a small waiting area, with several couches and a small glass-plated coffee table on top of a carpet. A water cooler was installed at the left corner of the waiting area, with a TV screen anchored to the wall.
"It's not a typical office is it?" Bruce asked.
"It's not." Dom replied. "It's us that does the working." Multiple office suites are installed in the office, acting as the main workplace. "You should be settling in soon enough." he said.
"You should go, it's late." I say.
"And now I'm the one getting chased out." Bruce said, a hand against his chest in a mocking manner that shows that he was hurt by that.
"I'll see you later on in the day." I say. Though a little bit hurt Bruce knew the importance of my work here and handed me baby Matthew.
"Stay safe." he said.
"You too." I say. Bruce kissed our young children farewell and me on the forehead and left. As Bruce disappeared from my range of vision I entered my office for the first time, also in an office suite. The suite has all the things normally seen in an office space this size and I went on to set down my belongings.
My phone buzzed just as I was going to begin work, with a message from Uncle Roland. "I'm at your office block, I need to speak to you."
"I didn't expect to hear from you uncle." I typed. "Something wrong?"
"You need to watch the news." he said. I looked up, just as Dom turned on the television. It was a news channel but I was more interested in the report the reporter was talking about. A small screen to his right showed the four members of the Farouk family, with a small word banner on display, saying the title, A PATRIARCH'S DARK PAST.
"Just now, we have received disturbing reports from an anonymous source, showing what was to be to us, a Soviet-style document describing Suleiman Farouk as an assassin working for the Soviet government. It is apparent to us that the source contains detailed assassination reports on targets such as the Hungarian political dissenter at the doorstep of a nightclub in West Germany, as well as the murder of a Polish political opponent." the reporter went on with the report, but my mind had gone blank at the moment. "An explosion was detected in the capital of Cairo, Egypt, a few hours later, in which two individuals were killed in the explosion. A tape recorder was found at the crime scene, in which a recorded confession was caught on tape, stating that the murders of the members of the Farouk Family were the individual's doing all along. A rather shocking end, to the shocking murder mystery that has plagued the South Korean, Italian and UK police for nearly two years." The reporter uttered the last sentence, just as I recovered from the moment my mind went blank.
