Chapter 2: Romeo and Juliet
-
It was now lunch time at Shenandoah high and the cafeteria was bustling with busy bodies.
Lunch was usually my least favorite part of the day because, well to me, lunch was the daily reminder that I had no friends. Normally, I ate alone at a small table that overlooked the parking lot. But today, the room felt different. It was as warm as a toaster oven, probably due to the fact that it was nearly zero degrees outside, which gave the room the home-like feeling. I swiftly made my way over to my secluded table with my homemade lunch in tow. Just as I began to settle into the hard chair, I felt the presence of someone hovering behind me.
"Yes?" I questioned before turning around.
"Hey, do you wanna sit with me today?" Eddie said while gesturing at the 'popular' table.
"Me? Sit over there?" I laughed at the absurdity of his proposal.
"Yeah," he replied. By now, the whole cafeteria was dead-silent. I could see why, considering the newly proclaimed school hottie was offering me, someone who most people choose to ignore, a seat at the popular table.
"Nah. I'm good, thanks." I replied and turned back around, hoping he would leave.
"Fine. I tried the easy way, but you leave me no choice. I'm going to have to abduct you," he said before scooping me up, grabbing my lunch, and carrying me bridal style to his lunch table.
"Put. Me. Down. Now!" I demanded as we reached the table.
"As you wish, your highness." Eddie replied before placing me a seat between himself and Brandon, a varsity soccer player who was in my AP-Lit class.
Before sitting down, Eddie received several high fives, applause, and whistles from around the room. I awkwardly squirmed in my seat and within a few seconds, silence had fallen over the table. The silence didn't last forever as Eliza, captain of the cheer leading squad and my ex-bestfriend, tried to strike up a conversation.
"Amber, honey, how are you?" She asked me, her voice reeking of fake hospitality.
"I'm doing just fine, thanks for asking." I replied smugly.
"Well, aren't you going to ask me how I'm doing?" She replied, pretending to be hurt.
"See, here's the thing about that Eliza," I paused, pretending to think for a few seconds, "I could, but I really don't care. At all." I finished with a satisfied grin before grabbing my lunch and making my way out of the cafeteria.
I could hear Eliza yelling angrily from across the room as I made my way out of the door, "And that, Eddie," she said while pointing at me, "Is why we never invite people like her to our table." She spat at him.
I walked back over to the table, boiling with anger, "Don't you dare blame this on Eddie, Eliza. If anyone is to blame here, it's you. You didn't have to talk to me. I mean, come on! Before today we hadn't talked in what...three years?"
"We-" She tried to retort.
"And don't give me that ' I was just trying to be nice' bs. You only wanted to show your 'status' to Eddie in a pathetic attempt to seduce him." Eliza's mouth flew open, "But I have news for you, honey. He's already mine." I said before colliding my lips with Eddie's.
... ... ...
"What was that?" Eddie questioned as he sat next to me on a bench outside of the cafeteria.
"I'm sorry, it won't happen again. But that bitch had it coming." I told him with a simple shrug of my shoulders.
"Not that. I meant the kiss," he said while looking into my eyes.
