It was a calm summer morning. I watched behind the counter as people walked in and out of the little cornerstone cafe I worked at in Edinburgh Scotland. I watched the two beautiful young women laughing at the couch table, I wondered what they were talking about. I watched an older man reading a book alone and enjoying his black coffee that was probably already cold since I had made it for him about half an hour ago.
I was wiping a table and cleaning up some cups when my coworker Nessa yelled for me behind the counter.
"Ida, could you help me with the speakers, the music stopped playing?"
I collected as many cups to my hands as possible and rushed to Nessa. She went to get a barstool for me and I climbed on it to check the speakers. I looked at her, pushed one button and the music started playing again.
"Could help if you turned them on first", I laughed sarcastically and climbed back down. She hugged me.
"I would've have been fired for about ten times without you. By the way, I sadly didn't get the tickets to the Hozier concert tonight, they sold out so fast!"
Nessa and I have been fans of an Irish singer called Hozier for so long, we bonded over his music when we both started working here and we have been trying to see him live for months.
"That's fine, maybe next time's the charm", I smiled as I poured an espresso shot to a chai latte.
As I collected a tip from a couple who were having a date at the corner table, the bell above the door ran. I turned around to look who came in and I recognised them immediately. A tall man with a long curly brown hair in a bun. That was him, Hozier, walking up to the counter.
I rushed to behind the counter since no one was there to take his order.
"Hi, I'll have just a black coffee", he said in a very friendly voice. My hands were shaking as I wrote down his order and I couldn't say a thing to him. I have dreamed about meeting him for years and there he was, looking and me.
"That'll be 1,50, thank you. Are you drinking here or..?" I said trying not to scream or sound like my voice was shaking.
He looked me in my eyes and then looked down that I would assume was my lips with a calm expression.
"I'll drink here".
He paid for his drink and I turned on the coffee machine. He sat down to a barstool at the counter. My heart was beating as I rushed to the back room where I knew Nessa was. I grabbed her arm and took her with me.
"No way!" She whispered when she saw him. "Did you flirt with him?"
"What? No!" I laughed. "You think I should?"
"Well, we have to get the tickets somehow!" Nessa giggled grabbing his attention.
He was looking at us, confused. Nessa quickly turned away and pushed my arm.
I smiled friendly and handed him his coffee. He smiled at me as he mouthed out the words "Thank you."
I started cleaning the counter. He was sipping his coffee and writing down something to a notebook, this is my chance, I thought to myself, I have to say something to him.
"Hey, me and my friend were just wondering, are you Hozier?"
He lifted his head up from his notebook with a little smile on his face.
"Yes, yes I am".
"Okay wow because like, I love your music and your album, you are such an inspiration", as I started to get more comfortable talking to him, the smile on his face grew bigger
"Thank you for the support!" He said very kindly. We shared smiles and held eye contact for a second but for me, it felt like forever. We were interrupted as a new customer walked up to the counter and I had to return to my job.
As minutes went by, I refilled Hoziers cup a couple of times and we made eye contact every time I walked past his seat. I was cleaning up some tables again when Nessa came behind me.
"He's leaving", She whispered and I rushed to 'clean' the counter again just so I could maybe say something to him.
"Oh", He started as he stood up. "Here you go, a tip for a breathtaking barista", He smiled as he handed me a bill. Our hands touched gently as I took the bill from his hand. I smiled widely for him as a thank you for his kind words. Was he actually flirting with me?
"Thank you Ida", He said whilst reading my name from my name tag that was pinned to my apron.
I looked at the bill and looked back at him but quickly noticed that he had already left. Usually people tip me with coins but this was an actual bill, but suddenly I noticed something peeking under the bill, could it be another bill? Holy hell, I first thought but when I actually looked under the bill I was shocked to find two tickets for Hoziers show tonight.
I started to jump and scream uncontrollably in the middle of the crowded cafe. Quickly Nessa came to look at what the hell I was screaming about. I just shoved the tickets to her hand and she started to scream just the same as I did. "Bloody hell, it actually worked!" I yelled. "You think he likes me?"
"Who knows girl, maybe he does 'fall in love just a little ol' little bit every day with someone new'", She smirked and started singing.
I couldn't get his eyes and voice off of my mind for the rest of my shift. I couldn't wait for tonight.
