Present

I'm praying Micheal won't attend. With every muscle and fibre of my being, I am sending signals to the universe to simply allow me this grace. He was out. That singular sentence consumed my every waking thought.

There'd be no reason for him to show up at his brother's farewell party since they couldn't stand each other. No, Micheal won't be here.

I turned towards Rika as she pushed up her light sweater and swung open the heaving front door of the Crist house. I hurried in behind her pushing him from my thoughts and refocusing on the fact we were ridiculously late. Rika grabbed my hand and we speed-walked across the foyer, heading straight for the stairs. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied the butler rounding the corner, but we didn't stop.

"Miss Fane! Miss Bailey" he shouted after us. "You are very late." Edward had been the head butler in the Crist house for as long as I could remember. He was a strange man. Very uptight and very strict but at his core he was a total sweetheart.

"Yes, I know." Rika cringed. I was just happy we were hearing this from Edward and not Mrs Crist.

"Mrs. Crist has been looking for you," he pointed out looking between both of us in a slightly disapproving way. I laughed internally, there was no chance Delia Crist she devil president herself would come looking personally looking for us.

Rikas eyebrows shot up and she spun round stopping the two of us in the middle of the stairs and peered over the railing to look at Edward.

"Has she really?" Rika eyed him with mock astonishment. I couldn't help but giggle to myself at her antics.

He thinned his lips, annoyed. "Well, she sent me to look for you." Rika grinned in accomplishment.

Rika smiled and leaned over the bannister, planting a quick kiss on his forehead.

"Well, we're here," She assured him. "You can get back to your important duties now." We turned and continued up the stairs, hearing the soft music coming from the party out on the terrace.

I turned quickly and called over my shoulder. "Have a lovely night Edward." He shook his head with a small smile on his face and headed back towards the party.

Yeah, I highly doubted Delia Crist, the matriarch of Thunder Bay, our small East Coast community, was spending her precious time looking for either of us herself.

"Your dresses are in Rika's room on the bed!" he called after us as we walked around the corner.

Rika exhaled an aggravated sigh and turned to me pulling a face in irritation.

"Smile Rika, she's left us pretty Doll dresses." The dresses themselves would have been nice but it was what they represented. It was Delia's last attempt to control Rika and me before we escaped from under her thumb.
