𝚙𝚊𝚒𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐: 𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚏𝚏𝚒𝚎He paces nervously around his room, wishing to have a bottle. Or two. Or more. He curses against Thirteen's alcohol prohibition. The wait is unbearable. Just when he's about to give up waiting, he overhears a conversation.
"How is she?" Prim asks.
"Besides being traumatized by the tortures she's been through?" Plutarch chuckles without mirth. Haymitch feels his heart drop to his feet. Optimistic in an almost-until-madness way, irritating, caring, sweet Effie tortured? No, that can't be even possible. What would they want to know from her? He's taken good care of not telling her any bad news. Or did he, really? "The doctors believe she should be fine."
"Haymitch!" Prim calls him.
"Hm?" he replies from his room.
"Wanna come see her?"
He blushes a little and gets nervous, his palms sweating. He dries them off on his pants. "I'm coming." He soon opens the door and steps out, heading to the hospital room where Effie is. As he walks inside, he chuckles and shakes his head. "Oh, Effie, Effie... and I thought I'd be the one who needed to be at the hospital, not you." But his smile fades when he sees her face. Paler than ever. Bruised. Dark circles under her eyes. "What did they do to you, sweetheart?" he asks and his voice cracks. He frowns. She's never been this silent before. "Can you talk? Please say something..." Or have they... turned her into an Avox? The thought of not hearing her -sometimes- irritating voice was unbearable. "Please say something..." he repeats.
"Who... who are you?" Effie mumbles. He wants to swear out loud, but he knows she won't like it.
"It's... me, Effie. Haymitch. Don't you remember me?" he asks softly, trying to prevent his voice from cracking again.
"Umm..." You can see she's struggling to remember.
Seeing that she can't, he tries with another question. "Do you even know where you are, sweetheart?"
She shakes her head. "No..."
"We took you out of the Capitol -where you were imprisoned- and brought you here, to District 13." Haymitch reaches his hand out to her, aiming for her cheek. Her pupils widen soon before she quickly turns her head to his palm and bites it. He yelps as some blood comes out of the marks. This isn't like Effie, he thinks. They must've done something else to her... Plutarch and the doctors were wrong. She won't be fine.
"Mutt," she growls.
"What?" he raises an eyebrow.
"Mutt," she repeats. Her pupils are so wide that he can't see her iris. Before he can say a word, she aims for his hand again but he withdraws it quickly. "You're a mutt!" A group of doctors surround her and sedate her. Haymitch walks back towards the door, dropping his head. She's gone. Hijacked, he hears Plutarch say.

Tired footsteps approach his room. "Whoever you may be, fuck off."
"Watch your mouth," the feminine voice scolds him. A voice he'd recognize anytime, anywhere. A smirk plays on her lips as she leans against the frame.
"Effie...?" he whips around and smiles.
"That's me," she nods. Before he can even think about it, he runs to hug her. Feeling curious as to why she didn't return the hug, he pulls away. "Can't, you know?" she chuckles, rattling her cuffed wrists. "Seems I'm not worthy of trust yet," she nods to the guards behind her. She sounds so broken, so sad, so lost...
"Oh, Effie, I'm so sorry... d'you want me to uncuff you?"
"No," she shakes her head. "They help me resist."
"Okay." He looks at the guards and asks them for the key. "Thank you." He looks back at Effie. "C'mon in."
She scrunches up her nose, expecting the usual smell but finding a rather pleasant one. "Oh."
"Are you surprised, sweetheart?" he chuckles.
"Yes," she nods. "You never fail to surprise me, Haymitch." He can't help but blush. "How's things been over here?"
"Well, we... managed to rescue Annie and Johanna..."
"And Peeta?" she asks. Haymitch just walks towards the couch, trying to avoid answering. "Haymitch. What about Peeta?" she insists, following him.
"He's... in the hospital. And he's... not well. At all."
"What is it? I need to know, Haymitch. Tell me."
He takes a deep breath. "He's been... hijacked."
"What does that mean?" she frowns. "Is that what they did to me...?"
"Yes," she nods. "You never fail to surprise me, Haymitch." He can't help but blush. "How's things been over here?"

He takes a deep breath. "He's been... hijacked."
"What does that mean?" she frowns. "Is that what they did to me...?"
"Yes," he nods. "And he's much worse. Plutarch thinks they've used you as a sort of..." he can't finish the sentence, it's too painful.
"Experiment?"
"Yes. He also tried strangling Katniss."
Effie frowns and looks down. "Will he be okay?"
"Prim suggested we hijack him back. Try with morphling or whatever."
"Did it work?"
"He was extremely confused. We tried with the clip of Katniss telling him about how she got the goat for Prim. When we finished, he was asking about the goat constantly."
"Oh."
"Yeah. It's not gonna be easy. That's if we succeed."
"That's a big if."
"Yeah, I know. We gotta try, though. For Katniss."
