The Saturday morning sun filtered through the thin curtains, casting a warm glow across the room where Daisjha and her son, Zy'aire, were playing. Zy'aire, with his wide, curious eyes and a head full of questions, was the center of Daisjha's world. At five, he was remarkably smart, often surprising her with his insightful observations."Mommy, why is the sky blue?" Zy'aire asked, looking up from his cars and trucks.
Daisjha smiled, brushing a lock of hair from her face. "Well, it's because of the way sunlight dances with the air, sweetie. It's like nature's own beautiful painting."
Zy'aire looked up, his eyes reflecting the innocence and wonder that Daisjha cherished. "Can we paint the sky different colors?"
"I think it likes being blue," she chuckled, "But we can paint our own sky any color we want."
They spent the morning talking and playing with every toy he has. Zy'aire's laughter filled the room, a sound that warmed Daisjha's heart and momentarily eased the lingering thoughts of her night job at Platinum Pleasures. Here, in these precious moments, she could forget about the world outside, about the judgmental glares and whispered comments. This was her sanctuary.
"Mommy, will you always be with me?" Zy'aire's question, innocent yet laden with unspoken fears, caught Daisjha off guard.
"Always, my love. No matter what, I'm here for you," she replied, her voice soft but firm.
Lunchtime came, and Daisjha prepared Zy'aire's favorite, grilled cheese sandwiches with a side of carrot sticks. He munched happily, occasionally offering her a bite, which she accepted with a grateful smile.
"Mommy, are you going to work tonight?" he asked, his brows knitting in a frown.
Daisjha hesitated. She hated lying to Zy'aire but also knew he wouldn't understand the complexities of their situation. "Yes, sweetie, but Tyla will come over. You'll have fun, I promise."
Zy'aire nodded, though his eyes held a glimmer of sadness. Daisjha felt a pang of guilt but pushed it away. She was doing this for him, for their future.
The afternoon was spent in the park, Zy'aire chasing after squirrels and laughing as he slid down the slide. Daisjha watched him, her heart aching with love. She wished she could freeze these moments, keep them safe from the harsh realities that awaited her as night fell.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the park, Daisjha knew it was time to head home. She held Zy'aire's hand tightly as they walked back, her mind racing with the preparations she needed for work.
"Mommy, when I grow up, I want to be just like you," Zy'aire said, looking up at her with adoring eyes.
Daisjha felt a lump in her throat. She hoped Zy'aire would understand one day why she made the choices she did. "You'll be even better, my love. You'll be whatever you want to be."
At home, Tyla arrived, her presence a familiar comfort. Daisjha quickly got ready for work, her heart heavy. She kissed Zy'aire goodnight, promising to be there when he woke up.
As Daisjha left for Platinum Pleasures, her thoughts were a mix of worry and determination. She needed to be strong, for Zy'aire. He was her everything, her reason for fighting, for surviving. In the darkness of the night, as she headed towards a world so starkly different from the one she shared with Zy'aire, Daisjha held onto the love and laughter of their Saturday morning, a beacon of hope in her challenging life.

In my best friend Angel's private locker room at Platinum Pleasures, I was getting ready for another night. Angel, the club's most popular dancer, had taken me under her wing, protecting me from the other dancers' vicious jealousy. I didn't need much makeup, but I made sure every detail was perfect.
