Sarah reluctantly exchanged the handshake with the man. She didn't take any steps back, as if this man had laid a spell on her as he got a bit closer. "S-Sarah." He rest his elbow on the wall and laid his temple against his palm.

"It's Sarah." With him closer and more illuminated by the light I got a far better view of him now. He had a beautifully matured and chiseled face, despite a faint scar that went from his scalp down to his right eye. He had a brown, slicked back mullet. He wore a black wife beater that revealed is perfectly toned, albeit lightly scarred bare arms.

"Can I buy you a drink?" Johnny asked with sickeningly charming look on his face. I shook my head, "I don't really drink."

"Aw that's a shame, guess we'll just have to skip that step." He said in a disappointed tone. I cocked my brow. "Steps to what?"

"The steps to a hook up."  My mind was trying to wrap around the fact that he just said that so bluntly without hesitation.  I struggled to find the right words to say when he started laughing before I could respond.  "Don' look so damn serious, I'm just fuckin with ya."

I lightly nodded my head and gave a small laugh in return.  "O-Okay."  I didn't realize my face was as red as it was in the moment.  "I haven't seen you 'round these parts before. You knew in town?" He asked.

I twiddled my fingers. "Yeah, I just drove in from Austin with a few of my friends along with one from Uvalde."

Johnny eyed me carefully, "Ya'll here to be dumb drunk heathens havin orgys or somethin?"

"W-Well no... actually we're here to look for the sister of one of my friends.  She went missing a week ago." Johnny nodded his head, "What makes you think she's in Newt?"

Well isn't he upfront? "The police scanners reported that she was last seen here, we're hopeful that we could do more progress in finding her than the police are right now."

"Sarah you out here?"  I heard the voice of Connie from inside the building.  She and the rest of the group had come out, a few of them with drinks in their hands. "Who's this?" Connie asked.

"Oh... this is Johnny." Little did I know he was carefully examining me with my back turned.

Leland stepped forward and extended a hand, "Sup man, you from here?" Johnny reciprocated the handshake tightly. "Damn dude, you've got a grip."

"Indeed I am, born an' raised. From the looks of ya'll I reckon not?" He said with a cocked eyebrow.

Danny piped up, "Nah we're from up North, we're not really staying long-

"Have you seen this woman?" Abruptly Ana spoke up and held up a missing persons poster of Maria. "Jeez Ana you gonna interrogate everyone tonight?" Said Julie.

Johnny took a long, dead eyed look at the girl on the poster; and after a few awkwardly quiet moments between all of us he looked up and spoke. "Don't know her."

Ana huffed and walked back in the direction of the van along with the rest of the group. I looked back at Johnny with a light smile, "Well, nice meeting you."

"Anytime..."

The rest of the group and I started getting back in the van when we heard Danny yell. "Shit! We're dry."

We all either groaned or sat in silence as we noticed the fuel gauge pointed at empty. "Well what the hell do we do? Hitchhike back home?" Asked Sonny.

"Yeah no that would take hours, let's just call a tow." Connie suggested. Ana just had a look of desperation on her face, "Where the hell would we find a tow truck in the this town that's open at this time of night?" Connie put a hand on her shoulder, "Why don't we just find that greasy Gas station guy?"

"What him? That guy was fucking weird! I swear we made glances at my rack." Julie exclaimed. "I mean... who wouldn't. Said Leland.

"Y'all run outta gas?" We all turned our heads to see Johnny had followed us to the Van.

"Uh yeah, we don't really know what to do right now." Said Danny. Johnny subtly took a quick glance at me and then said, "I ya'll need somewhere to go I could drive ya in my truck. It would be the least I could do."

"Really? Ah man thanks!" Danny said.

"Wait a minute, we just met." Said Connie. "I get it. But I really do need to be headin home so last offer."

"I mean...". As I spoke up everyone turned their heads at me.

"He seems to have good intentions."

"Alright you know what, we'll go with you. But we're not staying the night." Said Connie. "Fine by me." Johnny gestured for the group to follow, as we did I heard whispers between Julie and Leland.

"How do we know this guy isn't some kind of weirdo?"

"Come on it's just one guy, and we outnumber him seven to one."

"A guy can do a lot of one gun you know."

We all got to his truck, but there was only one available passenger seat. "Everyone can fit in the back." Johnny said.

"Might be a little cramped for seven people." I remarked. Johnny took a glance at me, his lips in a straight line. "Well havin you sit in the passenger seat will help make room then."

(Timeskip)

We were on the road for about five minutes, the rest of the group crammed on the back of the truck while Johnny and me had been having some light conversation.

"You've really never been outside of town?"  I asked

Johnny shook his head, "Never had any reason to... you know I noticed you were real eager to get in the car next to me."  He turned his head and smirked at me.
"U-Um well...I."  I didn't know what to say, or what to think.  I was immediately flushed.  Why was I so eager to go with him?

"You look a lot younger than everyone else."  Johnny asked.

"Well.. I'm not THAT much younger, I'm 19."

"One a' those boys back there your boyfriend?"  He asked, seamlessly changing the subject.  I shook my head.  "No, I've always been single."  Johnny chucked, I refrained from eye contact in embarrassment.  "Heh, that's a hoot.  I don't believe that for a second."  I glanced at him confused.  "Why don't you believe that?"

"I don't see how a girl as cute as you can't get a boyfriend."

There was silence in the car for what felt like a hundred years, he was unfazed by what he said.  Me and the other hand?  My whole face red, I didn't know whether to feel viscerally uncomfortable or extremely flattered.  I decided to break the silence by asking, "You have a girlfriend?"

"No."

"Have you ever had a girlfriend?"

"In a way... sure."  I didn't know what to make of that answer but I let it slide.  We pulled up to a long drive that led to a white farm house at the end; he parked right out front.  "Don't worry, you and your friends will be taken care of, we'll make sure of it.

"Who's we?"  By the time I asked Johnny had already gotten out of the car.  The rest of my friends climbed out of the back.  "Wait here."  Johnny went up to the porch, unlocked the front door and went inside.

The awkward silence outside began to grow uncomfortable as we had waiting for probably five minutes outside.  "Okay what the hell are we waiting for?"  Sonny asked.

I whipped my head in the direction of rustling in a patch of bushes nearby but disregarded the sound thinking it was an animal. We stood there looking at the house for a few more moments. But something... just didn't feel right.

I turned around in the direction of the bushes again, only this time to see a huge cloud of green smoke being blown in our direction by a woman. We all started coughing and I immediately felt light headed, we each began falling to the ground on after another and eventually I did as well.

And after that, everything went black.
