Jonathan Reed leaned over the lab bench, goggles strapped tight against his face. Wiping sweat-drenched locks from his eyes, he steadied his shaking hands, manipulating various unseen substances with latex gloves concealed in the bulky safety hazard chamber. The dense alloy shielding obscured its contents from view as toxic fumes pressed against interior glass, eager to contaminate the room beyond.

Careful not to rupture any seals, Jonathan gingerly deposited the granular samples into an awaiting beaker flask. As he took shallow breaths through a rebreather, his gaze wandered toward another container on the far bench - multiple crystalline fragments suspended over a red glow, vibrating erratically as frequencies from a nearby device coursed over them.

Hard to believe such unremarkable bits of matter held the unfathomable potential to manipulate time itself. At first glance, they seemed no different than common metals or crystals - inert elements extracted from the confines of ancient geologic layers deep underground.

But combined and activated, these were "metamaterials" capable of exhibiting programmable properties no existing substance in nature possessed. By splicing them with other quantum engineered materials and sampling matter collected from the strange spacetime rift in his basement, Jonathan hoped to catalyze a chain reaction that would open a doorway to any moment in history.

Or at least that was the theory.

He sealed the beaker in a heavily insulated transport carrier before carefully removing it from the lab environment. Moving swiftly upstairs, Jonathan inserted the canister into his living room's bulky metallic apparatus - a prototype time machine made up of various modules still under construction. His fingers trembled as they raced across the foreign interface, all dials reluctantly easing into the green activation zone. Power surged through newly forged connections, raw voltage arcing through patchwork wires and cables before cascading into the reaction chamber at the machine's core.

The entire house quivered as reality itself warped around the bizarre contraption's spacetime influence. Jonathan's heart pounded, eyes peeled for the visual markers confirming penetration into parallel realities - spectral distortions, light and sound behaving irregularly as mundane perceptions of the physical realm fell away.

A deafening screech filled his ears as every window suddenly cracked in unison, fractures spiderwebbing across their surfaces. Jonathon shielded himself as shards rained down amidst sparks erupting from surging electronics.

"No no no, dammit!" he shouted over the chaos, frantically trying to contain the reaction now spiraling out of control. But the metamaterial compound had destabilized, leaking chaos into this still unperfected system. The lights surged erratically before blowing outright, cloaking the mayhem in darkness punctuated only by spatters of electrical fires taking hold amidst overturned furniture.

The haunting wail finally gave way to a viscous silence as Jonathan was left alone on hands and knees surrounded by the aftermath - his hopes and endless life's work reduced to smoldering rubble.

"What the hell is this?" A sharp voice cut through the ringing in his ears. Jonathan lifted his eyes to find the petrified face of Elena illuminated in the doorway by dancing flames, scanning the demolished interior before settling on him.

"Elena! I...I must have left the burner on, something exploded in the kitchen and..." Jonathan trailed off, his mind scrambling to craft a reasonable explanation amidst this unfathomable wreckage.

"Please, I need to understand," whispered Elena, knuckles white as she clutched the door frame for support. Her eyes pleaded with him for any rational truth to cling to. "We all miss Mikey, but this..." Gesturing to the preposterous machinery intermingling with mundane domesticity, she struggled to form a coherent thought.
