Acrid smog clawed Jonathan's throat as he pulled the tattered coat tighter through neon-bathed alleyways. Towering derelict infrastructure pressed down ominously in this grim hollowed world - one of the infinite branches splitting from that pivotal moment in 1985 when his own timeline's path diverged away.

This forsaken realm harbored scant resources for an outsider, its ruined remnants picked clean by scavenging tribes squatting in anarchy. But scans of the time machine's damaged hull revealed advanced synthetic compounds stabilizing fractures from his disastrous test run.

Their quantum molecular profiles were seemingly engineered rather than naturally occurring polymers, hinting at scientific advancements diverging wildly ahead of his native 2025 capabilities. He prayed locating their mysterious origin held the key for surviving an actual full temporal transition.

Jonathan tapped the crude locator beacon concealed under tattered cloth, its strobing pulse responding to phase-matched exotic matter hoping to uncover an active source nearby. But the forlorn streets stood silent except howling gusts scattering debris into smoke-black skies. He pulled up his coat collar grimly when finally a rapid ping drew him toward the wrecks of an overturned city bus.

Scanning the derelict interior shrouded under stars of broken glass, the sensor illuminated a trapdoor hidden beneath corroded floorboards. With bated breath Jonathan pried access to revealed a dusty ladder descending into darkness. Gathering his nerve, he activated a head torch squeezed shut and climbed down creaking rungs into the yawning void.

Moments later Jonathan stumbled onto an earthen cavity buzzing with electricity, walkways and bizarre machinery obscuring every surface under choked flood lamps. He crept along narrow passages marveling at the sunken workshop crammed with exotic technologies defying generalization - crystalling tubes dancing with plasma, amorphic reactors bred seemingly from biomechanics and impossible alloys glimmering like bottled galaxies.

Hushed voices echoed ahead and Jonathan doused his light, slinking into concealing shadows along rusted catwalks suspended across the underground sea of found tech and patched cables. Peering over rust-pitted rails through clearing dust, Jonathan made out a band of rag-clad scavengers hauling satchels of clinking crystals toward a hunched figure.

Even obscured under a grimy cowl, his grandmother's aged features were unmistakable. Jonathan's heart quickened in shock - by all official records Dr. Teresa Grey had died obscurely decades ago pursuing this outlawed fringe science! Her stern profile was etched across faded cold case files that had driven Jonathan's father to drunken distractions.

Squinting closer, Teresa's area resolved into more advanced staging than these pauper's subsistence - pristine equipment juxtaposing the encroaching chaos still displaying odd operating systems dating closer toward Jonathan's era than this ruined realm. Diagrams of his own time machine gleamed from monitors as the silent doctor set aside her scavenged loot for fine-tool extraction.

Suddenly reality blinked like a cheap hologram, revealing the cavernous hovel now completely sterile, scrubbed of any human habitation. No vagrants or scavenging tribes visible moments earlier, only sleek mechanized laboratory equipment filling every surface.

The piercing shift only lasted a heartbeat before he perceived stinking bipeds staggering about the dim warrens, oblivious to what hid behind the ephemeral veil. But Jonathan realized the truth - his grandmother dwelled across a shifting dimensional threshold bridging two incompatible worlds the more primitive natives could scarcely comprehend...

Just then the cowl turned sharply in Jonathan's direction followed by a single barked order for her guards to check perimeter sensors. He barely slipped into wall shadows before heavy footsteps pounded along the raised catwalk as armed hunter-scavengers stalked toward his exposed hiding spot, exotic firearms refracting sickly green standby glow across their contorted faces caked with grime and suspicion...
